WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today on President Obama’s Fiscal Year 2017 Budget:

“This morning, President Obama unveiled his Fiscal Year 2017 Budget, outlining his priorities for the year ahead and for long-term economic growth and national security.  Our economy is changing, and his budget makes certain that our workers have every tool they need to take advantage of the new opportunities it offers.  In a world full of dangers, his budget wisely meets the security threats these challenging times present.  The President’s Budget is a blueprint for a solid foundation for American prosperity and leadership in the twenty-first century.

“The President’s proposal includes several key investments to address the most pressing challenges we face.  From a ‘moonshot’ to cure cancer to a doubling of federal clean energy research, it promotes innovation and seeks to position America as a leader in responding to global challenges in ways that help grow our economy.  It promotes education and opportunity from pre-K through college.  It calls for building a government of the future with more user-friendly online services and increased cyber defenses. It takes on destabilizing threats to our national security, from Russia to the Middle East, and continues to provide our troops around the world with the tools they need to complete their missions safely.  Furthermore, it supports federal law enforcement by providing funding for the FBI’s new consolidated headquarters, which I hope will be built in Prince George’s County, Maryland.

“While House and Senate Republicans have begun this year’s budget process by refusing to invite Director Donovan of the Office of Management and Budget to testify about the priorities contained in the President’s Budget – a striking break with tradition that is rooted not in expediency but in partisanship – I hope, going forward, they will rectify their error by working with Democrats in Congress and the Administration to craft a budget that meets the very serious challenges we face as a nation.”
