WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement tonight after President Barack Obama delivered his State of the Union address:

"This evening, President Obama laid out a vision of an America that prioritizes a strong and growing middle class. After enacting policies that have helped our economy recover from the depths of the Great Recession, the President is correct that it is now time to focus on the steps that Congress and the Administration can take together to ensure that all Americans can share in the recovery's benefits and access the opportunities that have always been America's promise.

"Even as our economy has recovered, too many American workers aren't feeling that recovery in their own lives. The proposals and actions laid out by the President tonight would address many of the barriers confronting those working to reach the middle class by expanding access to higher education, making homeownership more affordable, increasing the child care tax credit, and making it easier to save for retirement. I was pleased that the President also offered a plan to pay for his proposals in a way that provides for a tax break for the middle class while eliminating loopholes for the wealthiest.

"A significant part of our economic recovery has been the resurgence of American manufacturing, and Congress ought to support continued growth in this critical area. The President was right to identify job training programs and infrastructure investment as central to expanding manufacturing here at home and helping more of our people Make It In America. There are real openings for Democrats and Republicans to work together in this new Congress to support these efforts as well as to make progress toward fixing our broken immigration system, restoring the protections of the Voting Rights Act, and protecting equal justice under the law.

"Congress also needs to work closely with the President in order to keep our nation safe from overseas and cyber threats. President Obama continued to demonstrate his commitment to using all of the tools at our disposal to defeat the terrorists who wish to do us harm. Congress must continue to be engaged on foreign policy, and it must also play a role in ongoing efforts to prevent Iran from developing a nuclear arms capability.

"I hope we will work together to make progress on the issues the President laid out tonight so that all Americans can feel the benefits of a stronger economy."
