WASHINGTON, DC – House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today after President Trump’s decision to allow House Intelligence Committee Republicans to release a flawed, misleading classified memo:

“Today, the President of the United States chose to ignore the serious warnings of the Department of Justice, FBI, and the intelligence community to release a doctored classified memo for the purposes of smearing the law enforcement agencies investigating his campaign.  Nobody has any doubts regarding what this is all about: undermining the Special Counsel’s investigation into the Trump campaign’s possible collusion with the Russian government to influence our election and undermine our democracy.  It is also possible that the President intends to use this memo as a pretext for an unjustifiable firing of Assistant Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, which – like the potential firing of the Special Counsel – would trigger a Constitutional crisis the likes of which our nation has not seen since the days of Watergate.

“Chairman Nunes’s facilitation of this release and his altering of the memo after the vote by Intelligence Committee Republicans was shameful and inappropriate.  That’s why I’ve urged the Speaker to ensure the rule of law and adherence to the Constitution – both in letter and in spirit – by removing Mr. Nunes from his post.  Congress must protect the Special Counsel’s investigation so that it can move forward unimpeded and get to the truth.”
