WASHINGTON, DC – House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today on President Trump's decision to withdraw American forces from Syria:

"I am troubled by the President's seemingly sudden and poorly thought-out decision to withdraw American forces from Syria at a time when serious issues remain unresolved.  Our own military has said that ISIS is yet to be fully defeated.  It also remains unclear whether an American withdrawal would simply allow Russian and Iranian forces to fill the vacuum and assume even more of a foothold in Syria.  We cannot allow Iran to gain a permanent posture across Israel's northern border and with an ability to funnel cash, firearms, and rockets to their proxy Hezbollah in Lebanon.
"The President needs to explain to Congress and the American people what exactly is involved in this withdrawal and whether it will undermine our national security or the security of our allies in the region, including Jordan.  Any action in Syria must be taken with an eye toward promoting a political solution that ends the civil war and prevents Iran and its proxies from entrenching themselves in positions from which to threaten daily our ally Israel.  As a moral and strategic imperative, we must not abandon our Kurdish allies who continue to secure progress against the remnants of ISIS.
“I will continue working with incoming Chairman Engel of the House Foreign Affairs Committee and incoming Chairman Smith of the Armed Services Committee to ensure that this Administration has fully evaluated and understands the consequences of its actions in Syria.  The Congress must be fully briefed on any new developments."
