WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today following reports that a seven-year-old child died in the custody of U.S. Border Patrol:

“I am heartbroken and deeply alarmed by news of a young child having died in the custody of U.S. Border Patrol.  This is an unconscionable lapse by border patrol personnel responsible for ensuring the safety of those in their custody.  I join with Chairman-Elect Joaquin Castro of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus in calling for a full investigation into what happened and into the conditions at the facility in which this girl was being detained.  Her family and the American people deserve answers as well as action by Congress and the Administration to fix this terribly broken system and prevent such tragedies from ever occurring again.”
