WASHINGTON, DC - House Majority Leader Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement on Rosh Hashanah, which begins tonight at sundown:

“As Jewish families across America, in Israel, and around the world gather to usher in the new year of 5783, I join in praying that the year ahead is one of sweetness, joy, safety, and new beginnings.  Over the past year, our country has continued to move from the darkness of the pandemic into the light of togetherness and opportunity.  It is my hope that we can continue to make the year ahead one of light, hope, and liberty.

“I want to express my gratitude to those who will be spending Rosh Hashanah away from their families because they do so wearing the uniform of our nation in defense of our freedom and security at their duty stations around the world.  The past year has taught us that freedom bears the price of courage and sacrifice, and we must never take our democracy for granted.  From Baltimore to Be’er Sheva, from Detroit to Donetsk, we must ensure that the light of liberty never ceases to cast its glow, and that the Jewish people can continue to carry their ancient traditions forward in safety and freedom in 5783 and all the years to come.  Shana Tova U’Metuka.”
