WASHINGTON, DC – House Majority Leader Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today after the Senate failed to override President Trump’s veto of the bipartisan Yemen War Powers Resolution:

“I am disappointed that Senate Republicans chose to vote against overriding the President’s veto of the War Powers Act resolution and continue U.S. involvement in Yemen, which is contributing to the ongoing humanitarian catastrophe there.  Congress must use its authority to check the Administration’s actions, and there is a clear, bipartisan consensus that the status quo in Yemen is unacceptable and cannot continue.  We must make the United States a force for positive change and use our influence to promote a political settlement that addresses the dire humanitarian needs of the Yemeni people, who have suffered long enough.

“I will continue to work with Chairman Eliot Engel of the Foreign Affairs Committee, Chairman Adam Smith of the Armed Services Committee, Rep. Ro Khanna, and others to continue the push in Congress for action to bring the Yemeni people’s suffering to an end.”
