WASHINGTON, DC – House Majority Leader Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today on the September jobs report:

“Today’s jobs report shows that the recovery we had begun to experience from the COVID-19 pandemic’s job losses has slowed. More than 10 million Americans are unemployed now compared to February. At September’s pace, it would take three years to recover just the jobs lost in the month of April alone.

“When we look at other advanced democracies around the world, we see far lower rates of COVID-19 infection and economies that have begun to spring back to life as a result of carefully implemented strategies for prevention, testing, and contact tracing that have made it safe to reopen businesses and schools.  Here in our country, efforts by President Trump to deny and downplay this pandemic and ignore the dangers of prematurely reopening have led to more deaths and a stagnant economy.
“The key to bringing our economy back is to make it safe for businesses to reopen and for millions to go back to work.  As we do so, Congress must continue to provide emergency relief to those who need it.  Last night, the House passed another bill to restore the extra $600 a week for those waiting to get back to work, another round of direct payments to Americans, and an extension of the Paycheck Protection Program to help small businesses keep employees on payroll.  Our bill also provides funding for state, local, tribal, and territorial governments to keep teachers, first responders, and other public employees on the job.
“Senate Republicans and President Trump need to reach agreement with House Democrats so we can provide the relief Americans need to get through this crisis and build back better for the future.”
