WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today on the latest indictments by Special Counsel Robert Mueller of Russian government officials for interfering in the 2016 election:

“With today’s indictments, twelve Russian government officials have now been identified by law enforcement agencies as having engaged in cyberattacks aimed at interfering in our 2016 federal election.  Moreover, law enforcement has found that these Russian nationals under indictment corresponded with Americans during the course of their illegal activities.  This was a direct attack on our democracy by Vladimir Putin’s regime, intended to undermine Americans’ faith in our democratic institutions and to exacerbate social and political divisions within our country.
“Far from a ‘witch hunt,’ as the President alleges, the investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election is bearing fruit in the form of concrete evidence and court indictments.  His continued denials of Russia’s role is bewildering, and the fact that he plans to meet with President Putin in Helsinki on Monday as he plays apologist for Russia is dangerous.  It is equally dangerous that Republicans in Congress continue to undermine the credibility of the FBI in a partisan defense of the President instead of focusing on the real threat to our national security, which the FBI has been working hard to uncover and combat.  The President and his Republican defenders need to understand that the investigation into Russian hacking and election interference is not a re-litigation of the 2016 election’s outcome.  We must determine how Russia acted to subvert our democracy so that we can ensure precautions are taken this year and in the future to deter and prevent its next attempts.  The special counsel must be allowed to continue and complete his investigation unimpeded.”
