WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today on the Supreme Court ruling on the Janus v. AFSCME case:

“Today’s ruling is a blow to public sector workers and to the American people they serve.  Preventing public sector unions from collecting ‘fair share fees’ for services they are legally required to provide undermines their ability to bargain collectively.  This decision overturns forty years of precedent and will undermine the ability of law enforcement officers, firefighters, teachers, and other public servants to do their jobs and earn the pay and benefits they deserve while working in safe workplaces.  The Janus decision will go down in the annals of American history, along with cases like Citizens United and Shelby v. Holder, as one of a number of bad decisions that negatively impact our country and its ability to fulfill its mission as a land of democracy and opportunity.

“Democrats will continue to fight for the rights of all workers – whether public or private sector – to organize and bargain collectively for better pay and benefits and safe work environments.  Unions built America’s middle class, and I will keep working closely with the brothers and sisters of organized labor to defend the hard-won workers’ rights victories and expand on them.”
