WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today on a proposed rule from the Trump Administration allowing immigrant children and their parents to be held in detention indefinitely:

“Americans were rightly outraged at the heart-wrenching images of small children being taken from their parents at the border and detained in prison-like facilities.  Months later, hundreds of children remain essentially imprisoned because their parents asked for asylum at the border after fleeing violence in their home countries.  Now, the Trump Administration is trying to promulgate a rule that would allow the indefinite detention of additional children together with their families, ignoring both our laws and our values.

“This ought to be condemned for what it is: inducing trauma in innocent children in order to make a political argument about asylum seekers.  I condemn this proposed rule and call on the Secretary of Health and Human Services to reverse course immediately.  Instead of spending time drafting this rule, Secretary Azar and President Trump ought to be working to reunite the children still in custody with their parents.  Instead of sitting on their hands, Congressional Republicans should be taking action to hold the Administration accountable and ensure these children are safe with their families.”
