WASHINGTON, DC – House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement on the Trump Administration's infrastructure proposal:

“The proposal unveiled today by the Trump Administration is not a serious plan to fix crumbling roads, bridges, airports, seaports, and rail networks or to build the twenty-first century infrastructure needed to boost our economy.  It is a fantasy to assume that states and local governments have the kind of available capital that the Trump plan demands they spend without federal help.  Furthermore, we do not have to choose between investing in infrastructure and protecting the environment: if we approach infrastructure correctly, we can achieve both goals, without hindering growth.

“We need to focus on infrastructure development to encourage continued economic growth, which is why building a 21st century infrastructure remains a central pillar of House Democrats’ Make It In America plan.  As I’ve been traveling around the country on the Make It In America listening tour, I’ve heard again and again that we must have a bipartisan approach to this challenge – one that listens to stakeholders across the economy and at all levels of government.  Now that the President has unveiled his plan, I hope Democrats and Republicans in Congress can turn to the issue of infrastructure in a way that seeks a better alternative together, something that can pass both the House and Senate with strong support from both sides of the aisle and that provides our economy with the immediate and long-term boost it needs.”
