WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today on the Trump Administration's latest attempt to sabotage the Affordable Care Act by diluting the impact of the law's cost-saving subsidies:

“After trying repeatedly to repeal the Affordable Care Act and launching a campaign of sabotage against it over the past two years, President Trump and Republicans were sharply rebuked by the American people for efforts to undo the critical health care reforms that Democrats put in place.  Now, instead of getting the message that Americans want to protect those with pre-existing conditions and preserve the options available through the law’s health insurance marketplaces, they are doubling down on attempts to dismantle the Affordable Care Act through today’s announcement.  The approach outlined today directly contradicts the language and intent of the Affordable Care Act and would dilute the impact of the law’s cost-saving subsidies, which help millions afford quality health care plans.  The result would be fewer Americans receiving comprehensive health coverage, more consumers with junk plans that provide insufficient coverage, and a fragmented health care market that imposes higher costs on patients and their families.
“I urge the President to look carefully at the results of the recent election, much of which centered on the issue of health care, and reconsider this flawed approach.  Starting in January when we assume the House Majority, Democrats will be focusing on ways to bring health care costs down and protect those with pre-existing conditions, no matter how hard this President and his Republican allies try to do the opposite.”
