WASHINGTON, DC – House Majority Leader Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement on today's unemployment insurance claims report:

“While the tenfold increase in new unemployment insurance claims is shocking, it is not surprising as it reflects our national effort to defeat the coronavirus. These numbers are unprecedented, but so is the challenge before us and our unity of purpose in meeting it. Only by ensuring that as many Americans as possible can stay home and help flatten the curve will we save countless lives and win this fight together.

“Last night, the Senate approved a legislative package to assist tens of millions of Americans who will face financial hardship during this challenge. This bipartisan bill includes a historic expansion of unemployment insurance to replace 100% of average wages to help furloughed and laid-off workers, while for the first time allowing the self-employed and contract workers to apply, helping millions of families get by until their jobs return. Also included are direct payments of $1,200 per adult and $500 per child for most American taxpayers to supplement lost income and help with unexpected expenses as a result of this crisis. The House will vote on this bill tomorrow. Together, we shall overcome this outbreak, protect the health of our people, and do what is necessary to safeguard workers and their families.”
