WASHINGTON, DC – House Majority Leader Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement on today's unemployment insurance claims report:

“This morning’s unemployment figures, which show that over 22 million Americans - or one in eight working adults in our country - have lost their jobs in the past month, reinforce just how critical it is that our nation take appropriate steps to be able to safely reopen our economy. In order to do that, we must get this pandemic under control so it is safe for people to return to work. That means a concerted federal effort to significantly increase the amount of testing being done and the availability of personal protective equipment for frontline workers. So far, the Trump Administration is failing dismally to do that. I applaud state governors, Mayor Bowser, and territorial leaders who have been acting responsibly to flatten the curve in their jurisdictions and have been working together to bring this crisis to an end. But our economy will not be able to reopen and put these millions back to work until the Trump Administration does its job and takes this crisis seriously.
“Congress has already acted three times to meet this challenge, including with assistance to keep workers on payroll, providing larger unemployment insurance checks while expanding eligibility, and sending direct payments to most Americans. We are already at work on the next steps that need to be taken to aid workers and small businesses, and ensure states have the resources they need to administer unemployment assistance. I urge Republicans and the President to work with us on that effort so we can quickly pass legislation to help our fellow Americans.”
