WASHINGTON, DC – House Majority Leader Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement on today's unemployment insurance claims report:

“With more than 26 million Americans filing for unemployment insurance since this crisis began, the scope of our economic challenge is unprecedented.  That’s why House Democrats included critical funding for unemployment insurance in the CARES Act, providing $600 more each week to those out of work.  It’s why we pushed for direct payments to every American to help families stay afloat.  It’s why we’ve worked across the aisle to insist on the strongest possible loan and grant programs to help small businesses in our communities keep workers on payroll.  Additionally, it’s why we continue to call on this Administration to make testing widely available so we can reach a point where it is safe to begin reopening our economy.

“Americans understand that it would be a dangerous mistake to begin reopening our economy too early, risking a new surge of COVID-19 infections and squandering the gains we have made against the coronavirus thus far.  Only once public health experts tell us that it is safe to do so can we allow shuttered sectors to come back, but we will need a broad and comprehensive testing system up and running in order to prevent new outbreaks.  I continue to urge President Trump and his team to do their jobs and expand testing.”
