WASHINGTON, DC – House Majority Leader Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement on today's unemployment insurance claims report:

“With another 3.8 million Americans filing for unemployment insurance last week, bringing the six week total to nearly one in five working Americans, it is clear that Congress must do more to help those harmed by the economic impacts of our fight against the coronavirus pandemic.  That’s why House Democrats are pushing to extend the expansion of unemployment insurance benefits in the next package of coronavirus response legislation.  In previous legislation, we secured an additional $600 each week for those who have lost their jobs and made sure the self-employed, contract, and gig workers were eligible for unemployment for the first time.  Expanded unemployment benefits should continue during this challenging time.”
