WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today on S. 2372; the Veterans' Affairs MISSION Act of 2018:

“While the VA Choice reauthorization bill will enable the continuation and expansion of critical veterans health programs, I have serious concerns about its funding. Congress must meet its commitment to our nation’s veterans. That includes ensuring that our veterans health programs have long-term funding security and that other domestic initiatives serving veterans in our communities are not shortchanged.

“The bill considered today would shift funding for key veterans health programs away from the mandatory side of the ledger to the discretionary side, forcing Congress to weigh that funding against other programs that assist veterans. I am also concerned that this legislation does not put in place enough safe guards that would prevent this Administration from relying on outside care to the detriment of the care that many veterans want to continue to receive in the VA system. That is why I voted against this bill. I hope that, as it advances through the legislative process, fixes will be made to address this funding problem so that it can return to the Floor with the broadest possible support.”
