WASHINGTON, DC – House Majority Leader Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today in recognition of Women's Equality Day:

“Today, we celebrate Women’s Equality Day, which marks the adoption of the Nineteenth Amendment into our Constitution, a turning point for voting rights and women’s equality, which would not have been possible without the extraordinary resolve of suffragists who marched, protested, and braved imprisonment and torture to win the right to vote.  We pay tribute to their resolve and to the sacrifices they made for equality and to make our union more perfect.  They paved the way for the inclusion and participation of women in our government, including the most-female and most diverse House Democratic Caucus in our history.  I’m proud to serve alongside a record number of women and work closely with them to stand up for women’s equality and access to opportunity.

“As we mark this day, let us remember that we have so much more work to do to secure full equality for women in America, with women of all backgrounds still facing inequalities that must be confronted and addressed.  From equal pay to health care, from education to employment, Democrats will keep fighting to ensure that women can fully access the opportunities America makes possible and do so free from harassment and discrimination.  I look forward to continuing to work with my House Democratic colleagues to keep advancing the cause of women’s equality in America and around the world.”
