WASHINGTON, DC – House Majority Leader Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today after the Trump Administration released its budget for Fiscal Year 2020:

“The President’s Fiscal Year 2020 budget released this morning reflects the Trump Administration’s separation from reality.  It puts our country at risk of a another costly shutdown in October by demanding nearly $9 billion for a border wall that the Congress has already rejected.  It again proposes the same failed attempt to repeal the Affordable Care Act and uses budget gimmicks that make it harder for the military to engage in long-term planning.  Moreover, this budget would not balance for at least fifteen years, embracing the deficits and debt that President Trump and Republicans have hypocritically made the hallmark of their governing strategy.

“This budget submission underscores how important it is for Democrats and Republicans in Congress to reach an agreement on budget caps that will allow appropriators to get to work with certainty about topline spending levels.  We all have a responsibility to work together in good faith to prevent another shutdown and promote long-term fiscal sustainability so Congress can afford investments in our people and this nation’s security and economic growth.  That must be our governing principle in this era of divided government: cooperation to make smart fiscal choices, not confrontation that jeopardizes America’s future.”
