Representative Mikie Sherrill (NJ-11) seeks a Military Legislative Assistant (MLA) to plan, organize, and manage activities that support her preparation and participation as a member of the House Armed Services Committee with additional portfolio responsibility for foreign affairs, homeland security, immigration, intelligence, trade, veterans and related appropriations issues.  This portfolio is subject to change. 

Responsibilities include drafting hearing statements and questions and working with committee staff to ensure the Representative’s priorities are addressed; developing legislation, talking points, and memos; providing vote recommendations; cultivating relationships and representing Ms. Sherrill with federal agencies, businesses, labor organizations, interest groups, constituents, and other stakeholders.

We do not consider this an entry-level opportunity.  Applications should demonstrate at least four years of relevant experience in the military, as a defense agency civilian, with defense industry, or on the Hill.   Preference goes to applicants with current eligibility for a TS security clearance, strong knowledge of Department of Defense organization and decision-making processes, Hill experience, familiarity with passage of the annual National Defense Authorization Act, and New Jersey ties.
