WASHINGTON, DC – Today, House Majority Leader Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released a fully-rebuilt version of his popular app—formerly called “Whip Watch” and now called “Dome Watch.”  The app provides Members of Congress, staff, the press, and the public with live updates and news on what’s happening on the Floor of the U.S. House of Representatives. The new version is rebuilt using a modern cross-platform framework, allowing the app to now be available for Android and the web in addition to iOS. The app also has exciting new features, including live HD video of the House Floor.

“Today, I’m proud to announce a new version of my app, with great new features and a new name: Dome Watch,” stated Leader Hoyer. “The updates to Dome Watch build on efforts to ensure that Democratic Members and staff – and the House as a whole – are using the latest tools to make Congress more open, accessible, and transparent.”

The app, formerly called Whip Watch, was designed and built by Hoyer’s Leadership office—originally the Democratic Whip’s Office and now the Majority Leader’s Office.  The app has been widely used by those who follow the House Floor closely. It has been downloaded over 50,000 times since its June 2015 launch, and it currently has over 5,000 heavy users, including most Democratic Members of Congress and staff. The app helps make the House of Representatives more open and transparent by making it easy for anyone to follow action on the House Floor from anywhere.

The latest version of the app includes new features:
  • The public can now watch real-time HD video of the House Floor when the House is in session from within the app.
  • The app is now available for Android users after the code base was fully-rebuilt using a modern open-source, hybrid mobile app development framework.
  • The app now includes a “Progressive Web App,” which allows users to use the app through a web browser in addition to mobile. The web version includes desktop notifications and uses a real-time cloud database that allows to users to receive updates within milliseconds without refreshing.
  • The app has new notification icons in the top-left to quickly tell users whether or not (1) it is a voting day, (2) the House Floor is active, and (3) the House is currently voting.
  • The live vote information from 2.0 has also been fully rebuilt and is now more accurate, reliable, and expansive, including:
o   How much time is remaining in the vote.
o   The live yay and nay votes, including the breakdown by party.
o   Expanded information on what the House is currently voting on, including amendments, using data dynamically pulled from and the Rules Committee and party cloakroom websites.
  • The app still maintains its core 1.0 functionality, including:
o   Floor Updates and Daily/Weekly Floor schedules with custom notifications outside crowded email inboxes.
o   An always up-to-date version of the House vote calendar, including a webcal subscription option.
o   A jobs board that is the best place to follow the latest job announcements from House Democrats.
o   Access to press releases and videos from Leader Hoyer’s Office.
o   Custom notifications so users can customize which notifications they want through controls within the app.
Download the new Dome Watch in the App Store for iOS or Google Play for Android. Users who already have the previous Whip Watch iOS app will see their app automatically updated, or can go to the App Store to update the app.
