House Democrats promised that a Democratic House Majority would act quickly to restore our democracy. This week, we are delivering on that promise with H.R.1, the For The People Act. This government reform package seeks to eliminate dark money in politics, makes it easier for Americans to exercise their right to vote, ends the process of partisan redistricting nationwide, and imposes new, higher standards of ethics. Here’s what the press is saying about Democrats’ plan to make government work For The People:

Vox: House Democrats officially unveil their first bill in the majority: a sweeping anti-corruption proposal
“…By making anti-corruption their No. 1 priority, House Democrats are throwing down the gauntlet for Republicans. A vast majority of Americans want to get the influence of money out of politics, and want Congress to pass laws to do so.”

Axios: House to vote on sweeping anti-corruption package
“Several Democratic House candidates made the For The People Act, also known has H.R. 1, a hallmark of their 2018 midterm campaigns, and the legislation was formally introduced on the first day of the new Congress… The bottom line: In a September WSJ/NBC poll, 77% of surveyed registered voters said "reducing the influence of special interests and corruption in Washington" is either the most important or a very important issue facing the country.”

Roll Call: Road ahead: HR 1 vote
“The House this week will vote on its marquee bill, HR 1… HR 1, formally titled the For the People Act after Democrats’ 2018 campaign slogan, is a government overhaul package featuring changes to voting, campaign finance and ethics laws.”

“Democrats campaigned on a platform of increasing transparency and reducing the influence of special interests, and they say HR 1 shows their commitment to that promise. Provisions include automatic voter registration, independent redistricting commissions, super PAC restrictions and forced release of presidential tax returns.”

Huff Post: House Democrats Say Their Reform Bill Would Solve The Trump Administration’s Ethics Nightmare
“President Donald Trump has presided over one of the most unethical administrations in recent memory, and new laws are needed to stop it from happening again, ethics experts told Congress on Wednesday….This situation upended decades of thinking about presidential ethics. It necessitates the enactment of stricter laws governing the executive branch, according to the ethics experts testifying at a Wednesday hearing on executive ethics provisions in H.R. 1, House Democrats’ top priority government reform bill.”

“Most of the provisions in the bill covering executive branch ethics were included in response to the administration’s refusal to abide by previous norms. Those provisions include requirements that presidential transitions teams create ethics guidelines, vesting new investigative authority in the Office of Government Ethics, mandating disclosure of ethics waivers and other filings and codifying previous executive orders on ethics. The bill would also express the sense of Congress that presidents should divest from their businesses.”
