Message from the Democratic Whip

Nearly every week this year, a community has been impacted by a school shooting, and I am appalled and angered that one occurred in my district at Great Mills High School in St. Mary’s County, Maryland on Tuesday.  My prayers are with the Great Mills community as we mourn the passing of a student, Jaelynn Willey. She will be remembered not for how her life was tragically taken but how she lived with grace and love. I am also grateful that first responders on the scene acted quickly and courageously to prevent further loss of life. The days ahead will be difficult for students, teachers, faculty, and others, but our community is strong and resilient and we will continue to come together and lift Jaelynn’s family up in our thoughts and prayers. At the same time, Congress must do more to address this epidemic of gun violence. We must pass legislation to strengthen background checks and ban assault weapons, and I will continue to call on Speaker Ryan to bring legislation to the Floor and allow a vote.

Yesterday, the House passed legislation to fund the government for the remainder of fiscal year 2018. It was unfortunate that Republicans brought the 2,200 page bill to the Floor less than twenty-four hours after releasing the full text. In addition, I was deeply disappointed that  Republicans once again refused to uphold their promise to the American people to address the DACA crisis that President Trump created, which threatens families and risks damaging our economy. I will continue to hold Speaker Ryan and Republican leaders to their word and demand action to find a permanent legislative solution to protect DREAMers, including a pathway to citizenship.

Finally, this week the Trump Administration and Congressional Republicans continue to put our nation’s election infrastructure at risk by ending the House Intelligence Committee investigation into interference in our elections. I am also deeply alarmed by reports President Trump congratulated President Vladimir Putin on winning an election that was not free, fair or open. President Trump’s continued affinity for President Putin and refusal to take threats of Russian interference in our elections seriously are deeply concerning. I will continue to call on Congressional Republicans to put country over party and ensure that the Special Counsel’s investigation can continue uninterrupted.

Sincerely yours,

Steny H. Hoyer
