Message from the Democratic Whip

I remain heartbroken over yesterday’s tragedy at the Capital Gazette in Annapolis, Maryland. My thoughts and prayers are with the families, friends and colleagues of John McNamara, Wendi Winters, Rebecca Smith, Rob Hiaassen, Gerald Fischman. Yesterday's violence is another powerful reminder of the urgent need to take action to address gun violence in our communities. Enough is enough. My thoughts and prayers are with the Annapolis community and my gratitude remains with the first responders who took immediate action.

In the House this week, a majority of Members overwhelmingly rejected Republican leaders’ anti-immigrant proposal brought to the Floor. This partisan bill did not protect DREAMers or resolve the Trump Administration’s family separation crisis at the border. On Tuesday, I joined my colleagues in the Congressional Hispanic Caucus in sending a letter to the Departments of Justice, Health and Human Services, and Homeland Security requesting a detailed plan on how they intend to reunite families as well as designate a lead federal official to serve as a point of contact for Members of Congress and provide daily updates. We are still awaiting a response, but we will continue to demand answers and are speaking out passionately about this crisis.

Finally, yesterday marked the sixth anniversary of the Supreme Court upholding the Affordable Care Act. It's unfortunate that the Trump Administration and Congressional Republicans continue their assault on Americans’ access to affordable, quality health care with executive orders and by refusing to defend the law in court. I joined my colleagues and Americans with pre-existing conditions to highlight how Republican efforts are increasing health care costs, kicking Americans off coverage, and putting protections at risk for 133 million people with pre-existing conditions. Democrats and the American people want to strengthen the law and increase access to affordable, quality care. We will continue to hold Republicans accountable for their attempts to gut the law, and raise Americans’ health care costs.

Sincerely yours,

Steny H. Hoyer
