Congressman Steven Horsford (D-NV-04) seeks a Military Legislative Assistant to manage the Member’s national security, defense, foreign affairs, veterans affairs, and all matters related to the Congressman’s service on the Armed Services Committee. Primary responsibilities include:
Providing written and oral briefings to support Member participation in House Armed Services Committee (HASC) hearings;
Leading the Congressman’s National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) legislative proposal process as a HASC member office (identifying legislative priorities, engaging stakeholders, developing legislative proposals, working with HASC and other committee staff to tracking House floor proceedings, providing vote recommendations on topics related to defense and foreign policy;
Acquiring an in-depth understanding of topics related to the national defense budget, defense industry, and the Department of Defense;
Writing policy memos and assist communications department with talking points
Meeting with constituents and stakeholders;
Drafting and analyzing legislation;
Additional tasks and portfolio topics, as assigned by the Chief of Staff or Legislative Director
This is not an entry-level position and prior Hill experience is strongly preferred. Candidates must have excellent written and verbal communication skills, be entrepreneurial and adept at multitasking, have strong attention to detail and subject matter experience, and enjoy working as part of a collaborative team in an active and fast-paced office. The ideal candidate will have NDAA experience and a strong familiarity with the scope and duties of the House Armed Services Committee. Nevada ties are a plus.
