Congressman Earl Blumenauer (OR-03), a senior member of the House Committee on Ways and Means and the founder and co-chair of the Congressional Cannabis Caucus, seeks a Legislative Assistant in his Washington, D.C. office to spearhead his effort to end federal cannabis prohibition. This role will also be responsible for leading the Congressman’s immigration, judiciary, campaign finance reform, and voting rights portfolio.
Excellent writing, verbal, and organizational skills are essential along with the ability to be entrepreneurial and creative while working in a fast-paced environment. Job responsibilities include:
Drafting, introducing, and advancing legislation and amendments through the legislative process;
Tracking legislation and coordinating cosponsorship of bills for the Congressman;
Advocating legislative and policy priorities with the administration and other units of government;
Engaging with key constituent groups and stakeholders;
Writing talking points and legislative memos for the Congressman;
Staffing the Congressman during events and meetings relevant to the assigned portfolio;
Working closely with the Communications Director to communicate the latest policy developments in the assigned portfolio to the general public; and
Collaborating with district office staff to provide targeted information relevant to the assigned portfolio.
This is not an entry-level position and prior Hill and/or policy experience is preferred.
