Communications Director

The Office of Congresswoman Lauren Underwood (IL-14) seeks to immediately hire a communications director on an interim or permanent basis. Candidates available to serve full time from Washington, DC or Illinois are preferred, but the Office will consider part time or shared staff arrangements as well.

Ideal candidates should:

  • Have 5+ years of communications experience, ideally including on Capitol Hill

  • Have exceptional judgement in managing media relationships and significant experience going on the record with reporters

  • Have strong written and oral communication skills

  • Have experience preparing and staffing a principal for media engagements

  • Have the ability to produce high quality work in a fast-paced environment under tight deadlines

  • Have experience in exercising sound political judgement when working for a principal

  • Be able to manage and mentor communications staff, including a Press Secretary/Digital Director and Videographer

The Communications Director will be responsible for:

  • Developing and implementing communications priorities through earned national and local media, social media and other digital communications, paid ads, mass mailings, and SMS campaigns

  • Maintaining the Congresswoman’s presence in national and Illinois print and TV media

  • Developing and maintaining strong relationships with Illinois media and pitching stories to local reporters that communicate the Congresswoman’s work

  • Preparing the Congresswoman ahead of media engagements and staffing media engagements, often outside regular business hours

  • Coordinating all media efforts for the Congresswoman’s in-district and Capitol Hill events, including preparing visuals, pitching reporters, and drafting materials

  • Working with the Press Secretary to draft press releases, advisories, statements, op-eds, social media posts, and mass emails, often on tight timelines

  • Overseeing digital, video, and social media deliverables and ensuring integration with broader communications goals

  • Managing the Communications Team, which includes a Press Secretary/Digital Director and a Videographer

Annual salary range is $90,000 - $110,000. Illinois ties are preferred, but not required.
