Congresswoman Bonnie Watson Coleman (NJ-12) is seeing a Legislative Assistant to join her Washington, DC office. This position will be responsible for handling a diverse legislative portfolio with a particular focus on furthering the Congresswoman’s work in the energy and environment space and staffing the Energy & Water Appropriations Subcommittee. The Legislative Assistant is expected to advance the Congresswoman’s legislative agenda and handle legislative matters that arise in their portfolio. Some essential responsibilities include:
Drafting, introducing, advancing, and cosponsoring legislation;
Preparing the Member for hearings and markups;
Briefing the Member on relevant floor activity, committee work, and tracking policy developments in their assigned issue areas;
Drafting talking points, briefing memos, letters, and providing vote recommendations;
Meeting with constituents and maintaining relationships with key stakeholders.
An ideal candidate will have an interest in working on progressive energy and environmental issues. Previous work experience on these issues and/or appropriations is preferred.
Ideal candidates must be able to work well independently and as part of a team-centric office. They must be organized, detail-oriented, and be able to balance multiple priorities to meet deadlines in a fast-paced, collaborative environment.
This is not an entry level-position, previous hill experience is required. An understanding of the legislative process and experience monitoring the Floor is preferred. New Jersey ties are a plus, but not required.
