Health Policy Advisor

Congresswoman Terri Sewell (AL-07), member of the Ways and Means Committee (Health, Select Revenue Measures, and Social Security Subcommittees) and co-chair of the Committee’s Racial Equity Initiative (REI) is seeking a senior level Health Policy Advisor or Counsel to manage the office’s health care portfolio. This position is based in the Washington, DC office. Salary and title are negotiable based on qualifications.

The Health Policy Advisor serves as the Congresswoman’s principal advisor and representative on all legislative and policy matters related to health care. Additional covered issues and duties will be tailored to the successful candidate’s interests/experience and office needs. Success in this position will depend on the staffer’s ability to create, negotiate, and execute sound policies that benefit the 7th Congressional District of Alabama. The ability to write well, handle multiple concurrent projects, and manage a high volume of email requests is required.

Primary duties include:

  • staffing and briefing the Congresswoman for committee briefings, hearings, and markups

  • building and maintaining relationships with agency, congressional, committee, and leadership staff and district, state, and federal stakeholders

  • writing memos, remarks, and talking points and drafting legislation, agency letters, and supporting materials

  • leading the development and advancement of legislation in portfolio, including building member and stakeholder support for priority legislation and working with committee and leadership staff to advance priorities

  • briefing the Congresswoman and staff on the current state of play for all issues in portfolio

  • representing the Congresswoman in meetings and other communications with constituents, stakeholders, and state/federal government agencies         

  • coordinating with district and press staff on district outreach initiatives

  • collaborating with committee staff on REI agenda

  • working with Congressional Black Caucus (CBC) and New Democrat Coalition (NDC) staff on all health care related activity or any other policies in portfolio

This is not an entry level position. Previous congressional and health policy experience is highly preferred. Alabama or southern ties are a plus. This office is an equal opportunity employer.
