Legislative Assistant

The Office of Rep. Haley Stevens (MI-11) seeks Legislative Assistant to join legislative team in Washington, DC to manage a portfolio focused on Labor, Automobiles, Defense, Veteran Affairs, Homeland, Immigration, Transportation, Infrastructure, & Government Affairs. Issue areas are somewhat flexible and negotiable based on candidates’ passions and expertise. Ideal candidates will have at least 2 years prior legislative experience; strong experience formulating and moving forward on-brand legislative initiatives; excellent written and verbal communication skills; strong organizational and time management skills; a strong knowledge of the legislative process; an ability to meet deadlines in a fast-paced work environment; and a history of success navigating policy and politics on Capitol Hill.

Candidates with experience working closely with the labor movement or the auto industry are encouraged to apply.

Duties include:

  • Formulating and moving forward legislative initiatives for assigned issue areas, including bills, sign-on letters, and more.

  • Briefing the Member for floor work, committee work, work in the district, and work with outside stakeholders.

  • Writing floor speeches and committee remarks for the Member.

  • Acting as a liaison with agency staffs and committee staff.

  • Tracking legislation and other developments in assigned issue areas.

  • Planning and coordinating cosponsorship/support of legislation and sign on letters.

  • Meeting with constituents and interest groups.
