MI-13 Congressional Internship – Fall 2020

MI-13 Congressional Internship – Fall 2020

U.S. Congresswoman Rashida Tlaib (MI-13) is accepting applications for Fall internships in her Washington, DC Office and Detroit Neighborhood Service Center. This internship allows college students and recent graduates an opportunity to gain direct knowledge of how a congressional office functions and see the inner workings that are required to best serve the constituents of the Michigan 13th Congressional District. Many congressional interns have used their experience to further their interests and careers in public service, government and more. The Office of Congresswoman Tlaib is an equal employment opportunity employer and does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, religion, gender identity and expression, sex, sexual orientation, national origin, disability, military status, age, marital status, or parental status.

Washington, DC
In the Washington, DC office, internships run throughout the fall, spring or summer semesters for college students and recent college graduates. All internships are paid, and interns gain invaluable work experience. The hours are flexible to accommodate students' hectic course schedules, but generally run 9:00a.m. to 5:00p.m. In Washington, DC interns' responsibilities will vary. They may be asked to answer phones, run errands, research legislation for the Member and legislative staff, attend hearings and briefings and answer constituent letters on various issues before the House. As a result, interns learn about the legislative process and the many other functions of a congressional office.

In the Neighborhood Service Center, interns may be asked to do a variety of things, including day-to-day office work such as answering phones, writing letters and assisting with media clips. In addition, interns may be assigned to assist in various constituent casework or work on District-based projects of importance. District internships are also paid. Hours will vary based on district events and meetings.

Candidates for the internship program must:
• Be an undergraduate, graduate or recently graduated student
• Be able to work between 20-40 hours a week
• Have excellent written and verbal communication skills
• Have an interest in the metro Detroit Region
• Have an interest in communications, policy, public or community service

While not required, residents of Michigan’s 13th Congressional District are strongly encouraged to apply (Detroit, Ecorse, Garden City, Highland Park, Inkster, Melvindale, Redford, River Rouge, Romulus, Wayne, Westland, Dearborn Heights).

While an intern is expected to complete a full semester, we are very flexible in scheduling around academic affairs and commitments. Fall internships should begin in August and end in December.
