Rep. Stephanie Murphy of Florida seeks an entry-level press and staff assistant to assist her office in its operational and communications functions. The position greets visitors; answers the telephone and constituent requests for general information, tours, and other inquiries; and, assists with various administrative and legislative duties. This position also helps coordinate and execute communications activities.
The ideal candidate will have at least a bachelor’s degree; a strong understanding of or demonstrated passion for the legislative process; have a strong understanding of social media and have some graphic design and video editing skills; and be able to thrive in a demanding, fast-paced office. ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
o Answers and screens telephone calls for the Member and other staff members and takes messages when appropriate;
o Greets and screens visitors;
o Facilitating tour and flag requests and providing staff-led tours of the U.S. Capitol;
o Assists persons who have appointments with the Member or the staff and works closely with the Member's Scheduler to ensure that the Member’s appointments are on time and that the Scheduler is aware of the visitor's arrival;
o Ensures that requests for assistance are directed to the appropriate staff member in a timely manner;
o Helps implement media, communications, and public relations strategies;
o Compiles media reports in the district and the nation for their impact on the Congresswoman;
o Designs graphics for social media and helps create and publish content, including videos;
o Temperament to communicate with a variety of personalities in a tactful, pleasant, and professional manner;
o Works well under pressure and handles stress;
o Works a flexible schedule including long hours, nights, and weekends as needed according to the Congressional schedule; and,
o Performs other duties as assigned.
- Completion of a four-year college education is preferred for this position.
- No minimum of experience is required; this is an entry-level position.
SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED:
o Strong writing, editing, and proofreading skills;
o Strong communication skills;
o Entry-level understanding of print, broadcast, and online media;
o Entry-level digital design skills and strong understanding of social media;
o Entry-level video editing/production skills;
o Knowledge of current issues;
o Ability to perform essential job functions above;
o Professional telephone manner; and,
o Ability to work cooperatively and courteously with others.
o Due to COVID-19 work is mainly from home.
o When work conditions return to normal, the work is mainly performed in an office environment. Noise levels are usually moderate. You will be expected to work in a small work station without an expectation of privacy.
