Legislative Assistant

The office of Rep. Marie Newman (IL-03) seeks a Legislative Assistant to serve in the Washington, D.C. office. Primary responsibilities include handling the Member's work on the House Small Business Committee and a portfolio that includes (but is not limited to) consumer protection, financial services, foreign affairs, housing, education, trade, tax, and Social Security issues.   The Legislative Assistant will be responsible for: * Drafting legislation and amendments and advancing them through various legislative vehicles; * Preparing the Member for all Small Business hearings and markups; * Drafting talking points, vote recommendations, and other materials; * Monitoring and analyzing legislative developments, committee proceedings, news stories and other relevant info; and * Representing the Member in meetings with constituents and stakeholders.   Candidates must be proactive and possess strong organizational and time management skills, excellent written and verbal communication skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work in a fast-paced freshman office. Candidates must also share a commitment to progressive values, strong constituent service, and close collaboration with the district office. This is not an entry-level position. Salary commensurate with experience within the $50,000-$55,000 range. Prior Hill experience and a strong understanding of the legislative process is required. Illinois/district ties are a plus.
