The Republican Recap: Week of June 29, 2026

Here’s a recap of what Republicans achieved on the House Floor this week:

Protecting Children in Online Spaces ✅

As America’s youth spend more time online, there is increased urgency to provide protections to ensure their safety in the digital age.

The House took action this week by passing the bipartisan Kids Internet and Digital Safety (KIDS) Act. This bill gives parents more tools to protect their children online and requires platforms to implement stronger safety features for children's accounts.

The KIDS Act also establishes commonsense design standards to help reduce addictive and impulsive use while increasing accountability for online platforms. The House is advancing a targeted approach that strengthens protections for minors, gives families greater confidence that their children are safer online, and maintains freedom of speech.

Chairman Brett Guthrie’s legislation, H.R. 7757, the Kids Internet and Digital Safety Act protects children online by requiring age verification for adult websites, banning disappearing messages and targeted ads on children’s accounts, creating transparency with AI chatbots, and providing parent controls on kids’ accounts.

House Republicans are committed to giving our children the protections online they deserve.

"Congress has spent years searching for how to best protect children and teens online, and today's overwhelming bipartisan vote indicates that we have found our solution. The KIDS Act creates strong protections with new rules for design features, default settings, and kids' privacy," said Chairman Guthrie and Ranking Member Pallone. "We want to thank our colleagues for their strong vote today to protect kids, empower parents, and hold internet platforms accountable."

Committee Cliff Notes: Weekly Recap - Week of June 29, 2026

Here’s a recap of key moments from House Republican committees during the week:

Appropriations

On Tuesday, June 30, the Subcommittee on Financial Services and General Government held an oversight hearing on the Office of Management and Budget. FSGG Subcommittee Chairman David Joyce opened the hearing by emphasizing the importance of advancing the America First agenda, strengthening the partnership between Congress and the Executive Branch, and ensuring the transparent and accountable stewardship of taxpayer dollars. Members further engaged on a range of questions and testimony, including the importance of oversight, grant execution, staffing, and work to stop waste, fraud, and abuse.

Education & Workforce

On Tuesday, June 30, the Subcommittee on Early Childhood, Elementary, and Secondary Education held a hearing called "Field of Fees: Private Equity’s Role in the Commercialization of American Youth Sports." Youth sports help children stay healthy, build confidence, and learn valuable life skills, but rising costs are making it harder for many families to participate. The hearing examined how rising costs and certain business practices are making it harder for children to play, while also exploring ways responsible investment can expand access and improve opportunities.

On Wednesday, July 1, the Subcommittee on Health, Employment, Labor, and Pensions held a hearing called "Direct Contracting: A Prescription for Lower Health Care Costs." The hearing examined how employers can lower health care costs by using direct contracting—an approach that allows businesses to work directly with doctors and hospitals instead of relying on layers of insurance middlemen. Witnesses explained that this can reduce costs, improve access to care, and give workers better health benefits. For working families, that means lower costs, better care, and more of their paycheck going home instead of toward rising health insurance expenses.

Energy & Commerce

On Tuesday, June 30, the Subcommittee on Communications and Technology held a hearing called "Oversight of the National Telecommunications and Information Administration." This hearing focused on oversight of NTIA and ensuring America leads in technological innovation. Under President Trump's leadership, the NTIA is focused on delivering efficiently and effectively for the American People, helping connect underserved communities, and advancing American innovation.

On Tuesday, June 30, the Subcommittee on Commerce, Manufacturing, and Trade held a hearing called "American Global Competitiveness at 250: Legislative Proposals to Secure U.S. Technology Leadership." China's pursuit of dominance in emerging technologies has vast implications for America's economy, from the public to private sector. This hearing focused on ways to ensure America remains the leader in AI, robotics, and other new technologies.

Additionally, this week, the KIDS Act, a commonsense bill that strengthens protections for minors and gives parents more tools to help keep their children safe online, passed the House Floor under suspension.

Finally, Rules Republicans shared constituent anecdotes and concrete data to paint the full picture of how successful the One Big Beautiful Bill has been for everyday Americans.
Select Committee on China

On Tuesday, June 30, Chairman Moolenaar opened an investigation into five U.S. pharmaceutical companies – AbbVie, Bristol Meyers Squibb, Lilly, Merck, and Pfizer – to get more information about each drug company's clinical drug trials in China. Publicly available information on Clinical Trials. Gov already shows all five companies have developed drugs in clinical trials at Chinese military hospitals, and in Xinjiang, where the Chinese Communist Party is conducting a genocide of Uyghur Muslims and other minorities. Each company was requested to share company policies and regulations for clinical trials conducted in China, data on the number of trials conducted in China, information regarding each company’s due diligence process to ensure the protection of IP and sensitive data, and details of all joint ventures with Chinese biotech companies since 2020.

Earlier in the week, Moolenaar criticized China’s so-called “Ethnic Unity” law saying, “This week as we celebrate the 250th anniversary of our independence, the CCP is going backwards and showing once again it does not believe in the God-given rights we enjoy. The true national unity the CCP seeks comes not from oppression, but from citizens freely living and worshipping as they please.”

On Tuesday, June 30, the Subcommittee on Disability Assistance and Memorial Affairs held an oversight hearing called "Memorializing our Veterans: Outreach, Upkeep, and Community Partnerships at Veterans Cemeteries." Committee members, as well as off-committee sponsors of legislation on the agenda, had the opportunity to speak to the bills under consideration. This hearing provided members with an opportunity to receive feedback on their proposals from both VA witnesses and external stakeholders, while also examining veterans’ access to prosthetics and adaptive equipment, mental health and faith-based services within VA, and the long-term neurological and mental health effects associated with military aviation service.

On Tuesday, June 30, the Subcommittee on Disability Assistance and Memorial Affairs held a markup on the following measures:

H.R. 8552, the Veterans’ Compensation Cost-of-Living Adjustment Act of 2026 (Luttrell)

H.R. 9006, the Locating Our Unclaimed Veterans Act (Valadao)

H.R. 6588, the PROVIDE Act (Panetta)

H.R. 8552 would ensure that veterans’ disability compensation and Dependency and Indemnity Compensation keep pace with inflation by mirroring the annual Social Security cost-of-living adjustment. Members also considered H.R. 9006, which would help VA identify unclaimed veteran remains, confirm veteran status, locate next-of-kin, and ensure eligible veterans receive a dignified burial in a VA national cemetery. GOP Members also reviewed H.R. 6588, the PROVIDE Act, which would require VA to expedite disability compensation claims for veterans affected by major disasters, including fires and floods. The bill would also require VA to establish criteria for priority processing for certain disability claims, including claims involving extreme financial hardship, homelessness, terminal illness, or participation in the Fully Developed Claim Program. GOP Members underscored the need to support veterans in urgent circumstances while maintaining Committee rules, including the requirement that bills have a proposed offset before consideration by the Full Committee.

Ways and Means

On Tuesday, June 30, the Committee on Ways and Means held a full committee hearing called "The Growing Business of Sports: Reviewing Federal Tax Policy in the Multibillion-Dollar Industry." Republican and Democrat members of the Ways and Means Committee expressed frustration at the repeated pattern of corporate professional sports teams using tax-exempt municipal bonds and other taxpayer subsidies to relocate and/or construct billion dollar stadiums with negligible economic benefit for local communities during a hearing before the Committee focused on the growing business of sports and federal tax policy in that multibillion-dollar industry. Taxpayer subsidies ultimately finance the bottom lines of professional team franchises and hurt fans, of which 87 percent say live sporting event attendance is unaffordable and a similar 86 percent call live sports a luxury good.

At the same time, college athletics is undergoing a revolution in the era of student-athlete compensation for their Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL). Witnesses focused on the need for financial literacy for college-athletes, particularly regarding taxation rules.
The Leader's Floor Lookout: Tuesday, June 30, 2026

Here’s what to watch for on the House Floor today:

Empowering Americans with Disabilities in the Workforce

Millions of people have achieved the American Dream through the opportunity to work, build careers, and provide for their families. However, disabled Americans often face unnecessary barriers to employment because of outdated policies and unclear eligibility rules.

60 percent of Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) and Supplemental Security Income (SSI) beneficiaries express the desire and ability to be able to work in the next two to five years. However, fewer than one percent of SSDI beneficiaries leave the program each year.

Americans with disabilities who want to work should have every opportunity to do so. That is why today, House Republicans are advancing the Removing Barriers to Work for Disabled Americans Act, which would reauthorize a section of the Social Security Act to allow the Social Security Administration (SSA) to conduct demonstration projects to test alternate SSDI policies designed to promote work for those who are able. The bill also bars the SSA from conducting demonstration projects that would reduce a participant's overall income.

Rep. Austin Scott’s measure, H.R. 8884, the Removing Barriers to Work for Disabled Americans Act, will allow the SSA to test different program rules to promote work for disabled Americans and improve work outcomes, so that every American can have an equal opportunity to excel in the workforce.

House Republicans are committed to expanding opportunities for all Americans – including disabled Americans.

Scalise: House Republicans Are Lowering Costs, Strengthening Security, and Protecting Election Integrity

This morning, House Majority Leader Steve Scalise (R-La.) appeared on CNBC’s Squawk Box to discuss how House Republicans are lowering costs for working families, rooting out fraud, and preserving election integrity, while Democrats continue on their march to socialism. Leader Scalise also highlighted President Trump's leadership in confronting Iran and restoring stability to global energy markets.

Click here or the image above to view Leader Scalise's full interview

Highlights from Leader Scalise’s interview:

On President Trump standing up to Iran:

“Well, you know, [Iran's negotiators] said they want to meet with the president again. This has been going on, the negotiations. I think they realize the president is serious because I don't think they've dealt with a president that is frankly willing to take the kind of actions that President Trump's taken. I mean, he's taken out their navy, he's taken out their nuclear facilities. So this is a president who's not going to play games. But at the same time, the Iranians are just not used to playing by other people's rules or by world rules. I mean, they slaughter their own people. So at the end of the day, I think they're coming along very reluctantly, but they're going to have to come along. And so you're seeing the price of oil reflected. I mean, a barrel of oil today, like you said, in the low 70s. It was hovering around 100 just a month and two months ago. And so, you know, I think the volatility has calmed down, which is what the world wants to see. And that shows you that most people think that Iran is finally recognizing their fate.”

On lowering the housing costs for American families:

“Well, I want the SAVE Act too. We passed the SAVE America Act multiple times through the House and it's sitting over in the Senate. But the housing bill is very important. I mean, this is a bill that will lower housing costs. It will become law. Let's be clear about that. I'd like the President to sign the bill because I think it's going to help the President. It's going to help American families. French Hill, his committee, working with Tim Scott in his committee, did a really good job at focusing on what some of the problems are in housing, removing red tape, allowing more housing to be built both for homeowners and for renters. Both of those areas of the market are depressed, and this bill is going to help ease that and lower the cost to build that housing. So I'd like to see the bill get signed and let the President take a victory lap because it's something that he helped negotiate and it's going to be good for the economy, like so many other things this president has done for the economy that you see finally starting to move in the right direction.”

On the Democrats’ Bolshevik Revolution of 2026:

“Swing voters do not want socialism. Frankly, a lot of Democrats don't want socialism. So as you point out, yes, the hardcore Democrat base is very motivated. Frankly, there's going to be a lot of Republican voters motivated too because it's gonna be a contrast election and they realize what the stark choice is. You know, these radical socialists wanna come in and impeach Donald Trump day one. They want to reverse the gains we've made. They want to raise taxes. They want to raise energy prices. Remember, these are all the same people that want to shut down the fossil fuel industry in America. So if you want to see higher gas prices, vote for a socialist. If you wanna see higher housing costs, vote for a socialist because they promise everything. Everything's going to be free. But as you know, there is no such thing as a free lunch. And go look at all the countries where they've promised all those very same things. It ends really badly for the people, especially low-income people. They're the ones who pay the highest price for socialism. And America is not going to let that happen.”

On House Republicans's agenda for a safe, secure, and affordable America:

“Speaker Johnson and I both are working very hard to try to get a reconciliation bill. I'd like to see one. I've been in a lot of meetings working with different elements of our caucus. We want to address a number of things like fraud, like affordability, and also defense. Helping rebuild our defense so that we can compete with China. So, you're looking at a lot of different fronts, the elements are there for a reconciliation bill, but it's hard because we've got a two-seat majority and every Democrat has walked away. I mean, think about this: On fraud. We all know what a learing center is now because of what we exposed in Minnesota, yet every Democrat voted against the measures to cut that fraud out. I mean, Dr. Oz has estimated there's about $100 billion of fraud just in healthcare. That is theft, theft by criminal organizations in foreign countries. And Democrats won't work with us to stop it. So, we're going to have to do it on our own if we do. And I would like us to go down that road. And reconciliation is the best way to tackle fraud and return that money to taxpayers. And that helps affordability. So, anybody that talks about lowering costs and then defends fraud, they're lying to voters. And so, we're going to confront that. Reconciliation is the best way to do it.

“We've been working on putting elements of the SAVE Act in the reconciliation bill. Ultimately, if you talk about things like a fund to make sure that you allow states to require picture ID. I mean, just the basic idea of showing a photo ID to vote, just like you do to get on an airplane or to buy a six-pack of beer, to have the franchise of American democracy be protected. That's what we're trying to achieve. I think that's possible in a reconciliation bill. And so that's one of the items on the table.”

###
Scalise: Republicans Fighting for Working Families While Democrats Drift Toward Socialism

Today, House Majority Leader Steve Scalise (R-La.) joined Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.), Conference Chairwoman Lisa McClain (R-Mich.), and Rep. Beth Van Duyne (R-Texas) to highlight House Republicans' work to put more money back into the pockets of working families, strengthen America's national defense, protect children online, and celebrate our nation's 250th anniversary. Leader Scalise also warned that the Democrat Party is increasingly embracing a socialist agenda that is out of step with the American people.

Click here or the image above to view Leader Scalise's full remarks.

Highlights from Leader Scalise's remarks:

On Republicans voting for working families, while Democrats vote for fraudsters:

“I want to applaud Congresswoman Van Duyne for the hard work she did on the Ways and Means Committee and 11 different committees to bring the Working Families Tax Cut to life, to law. A year ago, July 4th, all of us were on the White House lawn standing with President Trump to celebrate the signing of what's going to turn out to be one of the most historic bills we've seen in our lifetime, a bill that is ushering in more opportunity for families, more wage growth for families. You're talking about— Congresswoman Van Duyne mentioned it, what's happening right now. About 30 million Americans have taken advantage of no tax on tips and no tax on overtime. That's more money in their pockets today that they didn't have a year ago because of that legislation.

“Keep in mind: Every single Democrat voted against that bill. They voted against it because they want Washington to have more of your money. They want to control and have more power here. And to do what with it? To use it for fraud.

“We've seen it in states like Minnesota, 'learing centers' that we exposed because of the provisions, the anti-fraud provisions of that bill that we passed a year ago. None of that would have been exposed if we didn't have that legislation in place that every Democrat voted against. So again, eliminating fraud in states like Minnesota so that working families, you know, a single mom working three jobs can have more money in her pocket. That's what the Working Families Tax Cut represented. We're going to bring a bill later this week to reflect on and celebrate the wins for American families that that bill reflected.”

On protecting kids and empowering parents:

“We're going to be dealing with a number of other things too. We've got the National Defense Authorization Act, a really important bill to set the priorities for our nation's defense. So of course, there are always a lot of amendments on that bill, but ultimately its final passage to make sure that we continue to reprioritize our men and women in uniform, give them the tools that they need to be successful, and continue rebuilding our nation's defense, something that President Trump made a hallmark of this presidency.

“We're also bringing the bill to address the state and foreign operations budget. [Congressman] Mario Diaz-Balart's appropriations bill, it's another item on the agenda this week.

"Last night, we passed a major bill to protect children online, the Kids Act. Huge bipartisan victory. I know they're not common around this place, but it happened last night. Where Chairman Guthrie and the Energy and Commerce Committee worked for months to put together legislation to protect children online. You can see what that bill did to help protect children from pornography and other things that we've been trying to accomplish and were able to do. That bill is now going to go over to the Senate.

“In addition to making sure our nation's defense is prioritized, we're also adding the SAVE America Act to the NDAA. So again, really, really important week. We're having other meetings on things like Reconciliation 3.0.”

On celebrating America's founding and rejecting socialism:

“When you think about all of this and we reflect on what's coming up this weekend, celebrating our nation's 250th birthday, it's going to be a great day. You see this, this great fair on the mall with, you know, every state that wants to participate, being able to show off what's great about their states and what's great about our country. I come from the great state of Louisiana, where we celebrate the Louisiana Purchase in 1803 that doubled the size of our nation and what it also allowed us to do in terms of gaining access to the Mississippi River so we could become a nation that exported our goods to the world. By the way, for the bargain price of $15 million, we doubled the size of the country. It was a pretty darn good real estate deal. And then you think of all of the other things that our state and every state contributes to the greatness of this country.

"At a time when the Democrats are in a fight to go to the Bolshevik Revolution and see who can tear down America more, most Americans are celebrating what's great about this country. We are celebrating what's great about this country. Let the Democrat Party try to have a fight over seeing which candidate they can come up with that hates this country the most. It's disgusting to watch on their side. But that's their problem that they're going to have to contend with. And they have not— they can't confront the evils of some of the people that they're nominating.”

On Republicans ushering in a Golden Age for America:

“This is a country that's actually experiencing a golden age again. I mean, gas prices are down 50 cents from where they were just a few weeks ago and continuing to go down. Affordability is back again. And Democrats are upset about that. Because they wanted it as a talking point for November. But it shows you once again why this is going to be a contrast election in November. Common sense conservatives against far-left communist Marxist socialists in November.

“Which direction of the country do the American people want to go? Do they want to keep experiencing this golden age that President Trump and Republicans are ushering in, or do they want to go back to the Bolshevik Revolution, which has failed every country it's tried? This is not the country we're going to try socialism. We will reject it. The voters will reject it in November.”
The Leader's Floor Lookout: Week of June 29, 2026

Here’s what to watch for on the House Floor this week:

Investing in the Arsenal of Freedom

America's military is unmatched, but maintaining that strength requires constant investment and a commitment to staying ahead of growing threats from our adversaries. House Republicans are committed to ensuring our Armed Forces remain the most capable and lethal fighting force in the world.

This week, House Republicans are bringing forward the FY27 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) to advance President Trump’s Peace Through Strength agenda. This legislation makes critical investments in the brave men and women who defend our nation by supporting President Trump’s request to provide a 5 to 7 percent pay raise for all service members, ensuring they receive the support they have earned through their sacrifice and service.

This measure also makes historic investments in our defense industrial base, secures critical supply chains, cuts waste, fraud, and abuse, expands domestic defense production, and creates new opportunities for innovators and workers to bolster the Arsenal of Freedom.

Chairman Mike Rogers’ bill, H.R. 8800, the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2027, authorizes appropriations to expand U.S. defense production capacity, modernize our military, and ensure America’s armed forces remain the most lethal, ready, and robust in the world, all while safeguarding taxpayer dollars.

House Republicans will never turn our backs on the brave men and women who defend our country by ensuring they have the resources and infrastructure they need to defend our nation and strengthen our national security.

Responsibly Funding the America First Agenda

An America First foreign policy puts America's interests first. Under President Trump, that means strengthening our national security, confronting our adversaries, supporting our allies, and ensuring taxpayer dollars are spent responsibly.

The FY27 National Security, Department of State, and Related Programs Appropriations bill demonstrates that America can continue to project strength and leadership abroad without increasing spending. The legislation allocates $47.32 billion—6% below FY26 levels—to counter Communist China’s influence in the Indo-Pacific, combat the illicit flow of fentanyl, strengthen key alliances, and advance American interests around the world.

This bill achieves these priorities while reducing spending by codifying President Trump’s executive orders to defund Biden-era climate, gender, and DEI policies, and by reforming foreign assistance to promote self-sufficiency and alignment with America’s priorities.

Rep. Mario Diaz-Balart’s legislation, H.R. 8595, the National Security, Department of State, and Related Programs Appropriations Act, 2027, responsibly funds the America First agenda by safeguarding American national security while exercising fiscal discipline in the handling of taxpayer dollars.

House Republicans continue to deliver on the America First agenda and ensure America remains a safe, strong, and prosperous nation.

That is why this week, House Republicans are advancing the Removing Barriers to Work for Disabled Americans Act, which would reauthorize a section of the Social Security Act to allow the Social Security Administration (SSA) to conduct demonstration projects to test alternate SSDI policies designed to promote work for those who are able.

Recognizing One Year of Affordability for Working Families

House Republicans kept our promise to working families by passing the Working Families Tax Cuts. Instead of allowing the largest tax hike in American history to take effect, we delivered meaningful tax relief that helped millions of Americans keep more of their hard-earned paychecks.

The Working Families Tax Cuts delivered real tax relief for Americans, yet not a single Democrat voted for it. The law included provisions such as no tax on tips and no tax on overtime, which put thousands of dollars back in the pockets of hardworking Americans. In fact, 96% of filers who received a tax cut under this bill made under $200,000 in 2025.

This week, House Republicans will consider a resolution recognizing the success of this pro-worker, pro-family bill. The vote will make one thing clear: Will Democrats acknowledge the tax relief Republicans delivered for working families, or will they continue to put partisan politics first?

Rep. Beth Van Duyne’s resolution, H. Res. 1383, celebrates the one-year anniversary of the Working Families Tax Cuts and the savings it has brought to American families, farmers, seniors, small businesses, and workers.

House Republicans believe the American people — not the government — should keep more of the money they earn.

Committee Cliff Notes: Weekly Recap – Week of June 22, 2026

Here’s a recap of key moments from House Republican committees during the week:

Agriculture

On Wednesday, June 24, the Committee on Agriculture held a full committee hearing with USDA Under Secretary for Farm Production and Conservation, Richard Fordyce, to discuss implementation of the agricultural provisions included in H.R. 1. The provisions in H.R. 1 extend key farm safety net programs through 2031, strengthen crop insurance and disaster assistance programs, and increase long-term funding for major conservation initiatives, making USDA’s implementation of these changes critical for rural communities across the country.

On Thursday, June 25, the Subcommittee on Forestry and Horticulture held a hearing called "Reviewing Partnerships to Enhance Management of the National Forest System," during which committee members heard testimony from state and local officials, law enforcement, conservation organizations, and industry stakeholders on partnerships that support forest restoration, wildfire risk reduction, public safety, and active management across federal, state, tribal, and private forest lands. The hearing comes as the Forest Service faces growing challenges from catastrophic wildfires, declining forest health, and increased management demands across the 193 million-acre National Forest System, while the Committee considers policies to strengthen cross-boundary forest management and restoration efforts.

Appropriations

On Wednesday, June 24, the Committee on Appropriations successfully reported the Fiscal Year 2027 Defense Appropriations Act out of full committee. Led by Subcommittee Chairman Ken Calvert, the measure recognizes a simple reality – a safer world depends on a strong America. Every investment is focused on delivering capability to the warfighter, modernizing our military, revitalizing the critical supply chains, and improving quality of life for those who serve. This also marked the twelfth and final FY27 bill reported by the full committee, completing markup action on all 12 annual appropriations measures and reaffirming our dedication to Article I.

On Thursday, June 25, the Subcommittee on Homeland Security held an oversight hearing on the Department of Homeland Security with Secretary Markwayne Mullin. The proceeding focused on border security, operations to protect the homeland, cybersecurity, disaster preparedness, and priorities for safeguarding the American people.

Education & Workforce

On Wednesday, June 24, the Subcommittee on Higher Education and Workforce Development held a hearing called "Workforce Rewired: Modern Apprenticeships for a Modern Economy." Republicans used the hearing to highlight a simple fact: a four-year degree is not the only path to success. Apprenticeships allow Americans to earn while they learn, develop valuable skills, and enter high-demand careers without being buried in debt. As technology and AI continue to reshape the workplace, these programs help workers stay competitive and help employers find the talent they need. Expanding apprenticeships will help grow the workforce, strengthen the economy, and create more opportunity for hardworking Americans.

On Thursday, June 25, the Committee on Education & Workforce held a full committee markup on the following measures:

Select Committee on China

On Thursday, June 25, the Select Committee on China held a hearing called "China’s Economic Espionage and Subnational Influence in the United States." Mr. David Shedd, Former Acting Director of the Defense Intelligence Agency, Mr. Michael Lucci, Founder & CEO of State Armor, and Mr. John C. Yang, President and Executive Director of Asian Americans Advancing Justice, testified before the committee. The witnesses discussed how the CCP is engaged in an ongoing campaign to undermine the United States through economic and traditional espionage, state-directed cyber intrusions, talent recruitment programs, information warfare, covert influence networks, legal and illegal lobbying, blackmail, infiltrating our critical infrastructure, and transnational repression aimed at the Chinese diaspora.

This week, Chairman Moolenaar also cosponsored legislation to prohibit the use of remote sensors and imaging equipment from China in American vehicles. H.R. 6576, the Stopping Adversaries From Exploiting (SAFE) LiDAR Act was introduced by Select Committee member Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi (D-IL) and it bans the use of light detection and ranging (LiDAR) from firms based in or controlled from China, Russia, Iran, or North Korea.
Veterans' Affairs

On Thursday, June 25, the Subcommittee on Disability Assistance and Memorial Affairs held a legislative hearing on the following measures:

H.R. 8552, the Veterans’ Compensation Cost-of-Living Adjustment Act of 2026 (Luttrell)

H.R. 8767, the Compensation Fund Recrediting Act (Self)

H.R. 9006, the Locating Our Unclaimed Veterans Act (Valadao)

H.R. 6588, the PROVIDE Act (Panetta)

H.R. 6921, the Hawai’i National Cemetery Act (Case)

Discussion Draft, the Unclaimed Veterans’ Legacy Grant Program Act

The hearing focused on six bills aimed at improving V.A. benefits, strengthening claims processing, and making sure veterans are properly honored after their service.

H.R. 8552, the Veterans’ Compensation Cost-of-Living Adjustment Act of 2026, would provide the annual cost-of-living increase for veterans’ disability compensation, clothing allowances, and dependency and indemnity compensation for surviving spouses and children so those benefits keep pace with inflation. H.R. 8767, the Compensation Fund Recrediting Act, would wind down the Filipino Veterans Equity Compensation Fund and return any remaining money in the fund to the general fund of the Treasury. H.R. 9006, the Locating Our Unclaimed Veterans Act, would require V.A. to create a centralized system to collect and store information on unclaimed remains that may belong to veterans. The bill would help V.A. work with coroners, state governments, funeral homes, and other federal agencies to confirm whether unclaimed remains belong to a veteran and help identify next of kin when possible. H.R. 6588, the PROVIDE Act, would require V.A. to prioritize disability compensation claims for veterans living in areas affected by a presidentially declared major disaster. The bill would also require V.A. to provide more flexibility on evidence requirements and filing deadlines when a disaster makes it harder for a veteran to submit a claim. H.R. 6921, the Hawai’i National Cemetery Act, would require V.A. to establish a new national cemetery in the State of Hawai’i. The bill would also require V.A. to consider access, transportation, environmental impact, and input from the Governor of Hawai’i, veterans service organizations, and other local stakeholders when selecting a site. H.R. 9321, the Unclaimed Veterans’ Legacy Grant Program Act, would temporarily expand the authorized uses of Veterans Legacy Program grants to support efforts to locate, identify, and inter unclaimed or abandoned remains believed to belong to veterans.

Ways and Means

On Thursday, June 25, the Work & Welfare Subcommittee held a hearing on the "Maternal, Infant, and Early Childhood Home Visiting (MIECHV) Program: Early Support, Lifelong Impact." Social workers, parents, and other expert witnesses highlighted the positive effect that home visits have for maternal and child health outcomes. The preventive program supports expecting parents prenatally through age 5 and served 79,000 families with 1 million home visits in fiscal year 2025. National evaluations show that the MIECHV improves maternal health, child development, and reduces family conflict. Unlike other federal welfare programs, the services offered through MIECHV to low-income families are evidence-based and grounded in rigorous evaluation.

The program’s authorization will lapse in 2027 meaning that federally-funded home visits for vulnerable parents and children will stop, unless Congress reauthorizes the program. The program was last reauthorized in 2022 in honor of the late Rep. Jackie Walorski, the then-Ranking Member of the Work and Welfare Subcommittee.
The Leader's Floor Lookout: Wednesday, June 24, 2026

Here’s what to watch for on the House Floor today:

Establishing Guardrails to Protect Americans’ Privacy in Firearm Purchases

When Americans make a purchase at a firearm retailer, credit card companies can assign a specific merchant category code (MCC) to the transaction, identifying it as a firearm-related purchase. This policy has raised concerns that these codes could be weaponized to monitor or track law-abiding Americans exercising their constitutional rights.

Some states, like Texas and Florida, recognize the threat to privacy posed by these codes and have banned the use of firearm retailer-specific MCCs; however, states like California and New York have instead mandated the use of these trackable MCCs.

To ensure Americans’ rights to privacy do not depend on their ZIP code, House Republicans are advancing legislation today to implement a national standard prohibiting firearm-specific MCCs and protecting law-abiding citizens’ financial data from being used to surveil lawful firearm purchases.

Rep. Riley Moore’s measure, H.R. 1181, the Protecting Privacy in Purchases Act, would prevent the use of firearm-specific merchant category codes, establishing guardrails to ensure financial institutions and credit card companies are not coerced into surveilling customers during constitutionally protected purchases.

House Republicans remain committed to protecting Americans from overreaching surveillance, safeguarding consumer privacy, and defending Second Amendment rights nationwide.

Scalise: Republicans Embrace Solutions, Democrats Embrace Socialism

Today, House Majority Leader Steve Scalise (R-La.) joined Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.), Majority Whip Tom Emmer (R-Minn.), Conference Chairwoman Lisa McClain (R-Mich.), and Financial Services Chairman French Hill (R-Ark.) to highlight how House Republicans are advancing solutions to lower costs for American families while Democrats continue their march toward socialism. Leader Scalise pointed to Republican efforts to lower taxes, unleash American energy, and expand housing affordability, while warning that the Democrat Party's embrace of far-left policies is moving it further away from the concerns of working families.

Click here or the image above to view Leader Scalise's full remarks.

Highlights from Leader Scalise's remarks:

On Democrats embracing radical socialism:

“I first want to express my condolences to Hakeem Jeffries for the devastating defeat that the voters of New York imposed upon him last night in his own backyard in Democrat primaries. You know, you could call it the Bolshevik Revolution of 2026, but the Mamdani takeover of the Democrat Party is official now. We've been talking about it for months, this move to the Marxist socialist left by the Democrat Party.

“They've become an unrecognizable party. You cannot recognize who the Democrats are anymore. This is surely not your father or grandfather's Democrat Party. They've fully embraced socialism. You look at some of the things that they talk about, it's, you know, they want to defund the police, they want to basically just get rid of the free market capitalist system that we have. And they are backing it up with their votes here in Congress."

On unleashing American energy:

"Our conference chair talked about it in relation to the Working Families Tax Cut. Today we look at global oil prices and they just dropped below $75 a barrel this morning. That's because of President Trump's leadership. And it's also because Republicans worked with President Trump to lower gas prices, to put smart energy policy in place so that we can produce our own energy.

“Now that the president has an agreement, an MOU with Iran, you've seen those prices drop dramatically in the last few days. That would not have happened if we didn't pass laws that opened up American energy exploration everywhere from ANWR in Alaska down to the Gulf of America. We opened it up and every single Democrat voted no because they want higher gas prices. Democrats are not happy about it. They talk about gas prices, but when you see them dropping, it's clear that the reason those prices are dropping is because we passed smart energy policies that every Democrat opposes.”

On House Republicans working to lower costs for American families:

“You're going to continue to see this drumbeat of Republicans focusing on helping make life more affordable for working families on every front. Chairman Hill just talked about it with the housing bill, a really important bill to lower housing costs. We delivered for American families. We did it for energy costs. We're doing it for a number of other issues, and we're not done.

“We're still bringing bills to the floor to address, of course, the funding of government, to have proper, responsible funding of government, we’re going to keep moving those appropriations bills. NDAA is going to be coming up next week to properly fund our nation's defense. We've got a major transportation bill, the Surface Transportation Bill is moving through the committee process. It's been through two committees. It's got Ways and Means still before it comes to the House floor. And I'm sure the Speaker's talked about it because the Speaker's been involved in this directly too.

“We've been working hard on a Reconciliation 3.0 bill. We've done 1.0, 2.0, two reconciliation bills passed with only Republican votes because Democrats just don't care anymore. They don't care about national security. They've all voted against funding our Department of Homeland Security. And what we're focused on now is fraud, trying to get fraud addressed with reconciliation 3.0.

"We are not done working and delivering for the American people while the Democrats are fighting to see how far left to the socialist left they can go."
