WASHINGTON, DC – House Majority Leader Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement tonight:
 
“Today's insurrection at the U.S. Capitol complex was a direct attack on our democracy.  It is shameful and despicable, but it will not prevent us from carrying out our Constitutional duties.  Tonight, the House and Senate will reconvene in a Joint Session of Congress to continue the Electoral College certification. We will fulfill our duty to the Constitution and the American people.

I am proud to cosponsor Rep. Norton's legislation correcting the injustice of denying representation to 700,000 Americans by admitting the District of Columbia as the fifty-first state.

“We're going to prevail. This is a sad day for democracy. It's a sad day for the confidence of the American people that so many Members of the Congress of the United States in the House and now in the Senate would do what they know is not right to do. They know President Biden has been elected.

The House has now voted in a bipartisan fashion to override President Trump’s reckless and irresponsible veto of the 2021 defense authorization bill. 

"The annual National Defense Authorization Act that President Trump dangerously and callously vetoed today was a product of true bipartisanship and reflects Congress's commitment to the safety and success of our men and women in uniform.  

Madam Speaker, they say ‘good things come to those who wait.’ The American people have certainly been waiting and watching and hoping that Congress would not only be able to avert a shutdown, but also provide much-needed COVID-19 relief.
