Declaring a national emergency would be a violation of the spirit of the laws Congress enacted to deal with actual emergencies by allowing an extraordinary circumvention of our Constitution’s framework of checks and balances.

We are outraged that Nicolás Maduro continues to block the entry of food and medical supplies into Venezuela. In his State of the Union address tonight, President Trump failed to obscure the reality of a presidency lacking in leadership and harmful to America’s future.

Today’s jobs report has to be viewed in the context that last month, 800,000 Americans workers effectively had their jobs taken away and were denied two paychecks, forcing them to go to food banks to feed their families or to take out risky payday loans as a result of President Trump’s shutdown strategy.

Today, 163 House Republicans voted against a resolution that says shutting down the government is stupid and bad policy. 

Frankly, what I think the President does is he states facts to conform to his beliefs, as opposed to having his beliefs based upon facts.

Today’s CBO estimate confirms what we already know: shutting down the government is a failed policy that harms our country and our people.
