The Recovery Report

The Recovery Report is a weekly newsletter about America’s response to the coronavirus pandemic from Select Subcommittee on the Coronavirus Crisis (SSOCC) Republicans.

Coronavirus Facts of the Week:

There are a lot of numbers floating around the headlines right now — including the addition of 4.8 million jobs in June — but Republican Whip and Ranking Member Steve Scalise (R-La.) has five to remember:

  1. No state has reached hospital capacity.
  2. Our doctors have a better understanding of how to treat patients.
  3. We know how to better protect our most vulnerable populations
  4. Tremendous progress continues to be made on vaccines and therapies
  5. The role and responsibilities of individual Americans in stopping the spread is better understood.

Coronavirus Quote of the Week:

“And now, just like everything else, we have become the manufacturer on record for ventilators, we have the most and finest testing anywhere in the world, and are producing gowns and masks and surgical equipment in our country where heretofore it was almost exclusively made in foreign lands, in particular, China, where, ironically, this virus and others came from. China’s secrecy, deceptions, and cover-up allowed it to spread all over the world — 189 countries — and China must be held fully accountable.” – President Donald Trump, July 4, 2020

Bogus Narrative of the Week:

Despite the fact that the virus originated in China, despite the fact that China lied to the world about the early stages of the pandemic while they hoarded medical supplies for themselves, despite the fact that the WHO’s secretary-general praised China’s response after China helped get him the job, Democrats and the media have tried to downplay and criticize Republicans’ efforts to hold China and the WHO accountable for their role in the pandemic. Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) called China efforts a “ diversion ” while Select Subcommittee member and Oversight Committee Chairwoman Carolyn Maloney (D-N.Y.) criticized the administration for pulling Americans’ tax dollars back from the WHO.

Why it’s false:

A new report that came out last week that highlights the importance of getting to the bottom of China’s lies and the World Health Organization’s complicity. According to the Washington Free Beacon :

Contrary to claims from both Chinese officials and the World Health Organization, China did not report the existence of the coronavirus in late 2019, according to a WHO timeline tracking the spread of the virus. Rather, international health officials discovered the virus through information posted to a U.S. website.

This comes after the WHO was reported as having dismissed early warnings from Taiwan. As Select Subcommittee member Mark Green (R-Tenn.) explained during last week’s hearing, a study from Columbia University found that China’s lies are responsible for over 60% of coronavirus deaths around the world:

“China’s deception resulted in 60% of our casualties. Have we spent 60% of our time looking into China’s actions? … We haven’t spent a single minute investigating what the scientists at Columbia University said potentially killed 60% of our deaths. That is a FAILURE of this Committee. Yet all the other side wants to do is point the finger at President Trump. That’s sad.”

The American people and the world deserve answers for what the Chinese Communist Party and the WHO knew, when they knew it, and what they did in response. Yet Democrats on the Select Subcommittee have yet to hold a single hearing or briefing on the subject and refuse to join Republicans’ efforts to get the facts.

As Ranking Member Scalise put it,

This Week’s SSOCC Highlights:

The House is in recess this week, but oversight isn’t taking a vacation. Select Subcommittee Republicans will continue their work to hold governors accountable for their deadly nursing home orders and hold China and the WHO accountable for their roles in the pandemic.
