The Leader’s Floor Lookout: Thursday, January 26, 2023

Here’s what to watch for on the House Floor today:
Unleash Domestic Energy Production and Lower Gas Prices    The Strategic Petroleum Reserve was created by Congress to respond to oil supply disruptions, such as natural disasters. Sadly, President Biden has used the SPR as his own personal piggy bank and tapped into our emergency reserves to try to bail out his administration’s extreme climate agenda and lower gas prices. As a result, the Strategic Petroleum Reserve is now at its lowest level since 1983.
Releasing oil from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve is not a long-term solution to help hardworking families devastated by President Biden's war on American energy. If Democrats were serious about lowering gas prices for American families, they would abandon their radical far-left policies that have led to the cancelation of critical pipelines and endless permitting delays and encourage oil and gas development and production on U.S. soil.
House Republicans have a bill that will protect the Strategic Petroleum Reserve (SPR) and strengthen our nation’s energy security. Energy and Commerce Committee Chairwoman Cathy McMorris Rodgers’ legislation, H.R. 21, the Strategic Production Response Act, would require the Department of Energy to stop their abuse of the SPR and to develop a plan to increase oil and gas production on federal lands that offsets any additional drawdowns. At this week’s stakeout with reporters, Leader Scalise called out President Biden for threatening to veto the Strategic Production Response Act. “In the meantime, we've got a Strategic Petroleum Reserve for a reason. It’s there for emergencies. It's not there to mask the President's bad energy policies. It's there in times of need, and this President's raided more than 40 percent of that reserve. This bill just says if you're going to raid the reserve, show a plan on how you're going to replenish it. And why the White House would issue a veto threat on that boggles, I think, the mind of most common sense people. But unfortunately, that's what we've seen commonplace from this administration,” said House Majority Leader Steve Scalise.

President Biden must restore policies that promote American energy independence instead of relying on America’s adversaries and foreign dictators for our energy sources.
