Committee Cliff Notes: Weekly Preview – Week of May 15, 2023

Here’s what to watch for from House Republican committees during the week:

Agriculture

On Tuesday, May 16, the Subcommittee on Forestry will hold a hearing called "To Review the National Forest System: Supporting Forest Health and Confronting the Wildfire Crisis."

On Wednesday, May 17, the Subcommittee on Livestock, Dairy, and Poultry will hold a hearing called “A Review of Animal Agriculture Stakeholder Priorities.”

Armed Services

On Tuesday, May 16, the Committee on Armed Services will hold a full committee hearing titled "Member Day."

Education and Workforce

On Tuesday, May 16, the Committee on Education and the Workforce will hold a full committee hearing called “Examining the Policies and Priorities of the Department of Education."

Energy and Commerce

On Tuesday, May 16, the Energy, Climate, and Grid Security Subcommittee will hold a markup on the following legislation:
  • H.R. 1042, Prohibiting Russian Uranium Imports Act (Rodgers)
  • H.R. 1640, Save Our Gas Stoves Act (Lesko)
  • H.R. 3277, Energy Emergency Leadership Act (Walberg)
On Tuesday, May 16, the Subcommittee on Oversight and Investigations will hold a hearing called “Protecting Critical Infrastructure from Cyberattacks: Examining Expertise of Sector Specific Agencies.”
 
Financial Services

On Tuesday, May 16, the Financial Services Committee will hold a full committee hearing called "Oversight of Prudential Regulators."

On Wednesday, May 17, the Subcommittees on Financial Institutions and Monetary Policy and the Subcommittee on Oversight and Investigations will hold a joint hearing titled “Continued Oversight Over Regional Bank Failures.”

On Wednesday, May 17, the Subcommittee on Housing and Insurance will hold a hearing entitled “The Current Mortgage Market: Undermining Housing Affordability with Politics.” 

On Thursday, May 18, the Subcommittee on Digital Assets, Financial Technology and Inclusion will hold a hearing called “Putting the ‘Stable’ in ‘Stablecoins:’ How Legislation Will Help Stablecoins Achieve Their Promise”

Foreign Affairs

On Tuesday, May 16, the Foreign Affairs Committee will hold a full committee markup on the following legislation:
  • H.R. 3205, To disrupt the international fentanyl supply chain, and for other purposes (McCaul)
  • H.R. 3203, To impose sanctions with respect to Chinese producers of synthetic opioids and opioid precursors, to hold Chinese officials accountable for the spread of illicit fentanyl, and for other purposes (Barr)
  • H.R. 3202, To prohibit any official action to recognize or normalize relations with any Government of Syria that is led by Bashar al-Assad, and for other purposes (Wilson)

On Wednesday, May 17, the Foreign Affairs Committee will hold a full committee hearing called "The State Of American Influence In 2023: Great Power Competition And Persistent Crises In An Era Of Budget Constraints."

On Thursday, May 18, the Subcommittee on the Indo-Pacific will hold a hearing called "Standing United Against the People’s Republic of China’s Economic Aggression and Predatory Practices."

Homeland Security
 
On Tuesday, May 16, the Subcommittee on Counterterrorism, Law Enforcement, and Intelligence and the Subcommittee on Emergency Management and Technology will hold a joint hearing entitled, “Protecting the Homeland: An Examination of Federal Efforts to Support State and Local Law Enforcement.”

On Tuesday, May 16, the Subcommittee on Oversight, Investigations, and Accountability will hold a hearing entitled, “’Mostly Peaceful’: Countering Left-Wing Organized Violence.”

On Wednesday, May 17, the Committee on Homeland Security will hold a markup on the following legislation:

House Administration

On Tuesday, May 16, the Committee on House Administration will hold a full committee hearing titled, “Looking Ahead Series: Oversight of the United States Capitol Police.”

House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence

On Tuesday, May 16, HPSCI will hold a closed full committee hearing on Security Clearance Reform.

On Wednesday, May 17, the Subcommittee on the National Intelligence Enterprise will hold a closed hearing on the Roles and Functions of the National Counterintelligence Center.

On Thursday, May 18, the Subcommittee on the Central Intelligence Agency will hold a closed hearing on Agriculture Intelligence.

Judiciary

On Tuesday, May 16, the Subcommittee on the Constitution and Limited Government will hold a hearing called "Revisiting the Implications of the FACE Act."

On Tuesday, May 16, the Subcommittee on Responsiveness and Accountability to Oversight will hold a hearing called "Compliance with Committee Oversight."

On Wednesday, May 17, the Subcommittee on Courts, Intellectual Property, and the Internet will hold a hearing called "Artificial Intelligence and Intellectual Property: Part I - Interoperability of AI and Copyright Law."

Natural Resources

On Tuesday, May 16, the Subcommittee on Energy and Mineral Resources will hold an oversight hearing titled “Examining the President’s FY 2024 Budget for the Bureau of Land Management and the Office of Surface Mining, Reclamation and Enforcement.” 

On Tuesday, May 16, the Subcommittee on Federal Lands will hold an oversight hearing titled “Examining the Challenges Facing Forest Management, Wildfire Suppression, and Wildland Firefighters Ahead of the 2023 Wildfire Year."

On Wednesday, May 17, the Natural Resources Committee will hold a full committee markup on the following legislation:

On Wednesday, May 17, the Subcommittee on Government Operations and the Federal Workforce will hold a hearing called "Tracking the Postal Service: An Update on the Delivering for America Plan"

On Tuesday, May 16, the Subcommittee on Water Resources and Environment will hold a hearing called “The Next Fifty Years of the Clean Water Act: Examining the Law and Infrastructure Project Completion.”

On Wednesday, May 17, the Health and Oversight and Investigations Subcommittees will hold a joint oversight hearing titled "VHA Recruitment and Retention: Is Bureaucracy Holding Back a Quality Workforce?"

Ways and Means

On Tuesday, May 16, the Committee on Ways and Means will hold a full committee hearing called “Health Care Price Transparency: A Patient’s Right to Know.”
