Committee Cliff Notes: Weekly Preview – Week of May 22, 2023

Here’s what to watch for from House Republican committees during the week:

Agriculture

On Tuesday, May 23, the Subcommittee on Conservation, Research, and Biotechnology will hold a hearing called "For the purpose of receiving testimony from the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Natural Resources Conservation Service and Farm Service Agency."

Appropriations

On Tuesday, May 23, the Committee on Appropriations will hold a full committee markup called "Fiscal Year 2024 Military Construction, Veterans Affairs, and Related Agencies and Legislative Branch Bills and Interim Suballocation of Budget Allocations."

On Wednesday, May 24, the Committee on Appropriations will hold a full committee markup called "Fiscal Year 2024 Homeland Security and Agriculture, Rural Development, Food and Drug Administration, and Related Agencies Bills."

Budget

On Wednesday, May 24, the Budget Committee will hold a full committee hearing titled "Reigniting American Growth and Prosperity Series: Removing the Burdens of Government Overreach."

Education and Workforce

On Tuesday, May 23, the Subcommittee on Health, Employment, Labor, and Pensions will hold a hearing called “Protecting Employees's Rights: Ensuring Fair Elections at the NLRB."

On Wednesday, May 24, the Subcommittee on Higher Education and Workforce Development will hold a hearing called "Breaking the System Part II: Examining the Implications of Biden's Student Loan Policies for Students and Taxpayers."

Energy and Commerce

On Tuesday, May 23, the Subcommittee on Communications and Technology will hold a legislative hearing called "Oversight and Reauthorization of the National Telecommunications and Information Administration."

On Tuesday, May 23, the Subcommittee on Oversight and Investigations will hold a hearing called “Growing the Domestic Energy Sector Supply Chain and Manufacturing Base: Are Federal Efforts Working?”
 
Financial Services

On Tuesday, May 23, the Financial Services Committee will hold a full committee hearing called "FHFA Oversight: Protecting Homeowners and Taxpayers."

On Wednesday, May 24, the Financial Services Committee will hold a full committee markup on the following legislation:
  • H.R. __, the Increasing Financial Regulatory Accountability and Transparency Act (Barr)
  • H.R. __, the Middle Class Borrower Protection Act of 2023 (Davidson)
  • H.R. 2622, a bill to amend the Investment Advisers Act of 1940 to codify certain Securities and Exchange Commission no-action letters that exclude brokers and dealers compensated for certain research services from the definition of investment adviser, and for other purposes (Sessions)

On Thursday, May 25, the Subcommittee on National Security, Illicit Finance, and International Financial Institutions will hold a hearing titled “International Financial Institutions in an Era of Great Power Competition.”

Foreign Affairs

On Tuesday, May 23, the Subcommittee on Global Health, Global Human Rights and International Organizations will hold a hearing called "Bring Abducted Children Home."

On Tuesday, May 23, the Subcommittee on Europe will hold a hearing called "Examining the Fiscal Year 24 State and Foreign Operations Budget Request for Europe."

On Wednesday, May 24, the Foreign Affairs Committee will hold a hearing called "Modernizing U.S. Arms Exports and a Stronger AUKUS."

Homeland Security
 
On Tuesday, May 23, the Subcommittee on Counterterrorism, Law Enforcement, and Intelligence will hold a hearing entitled, “A Security Sprint: Assessing the U.S. Homeland’s Vulnerabilities to Chinese Communist Party Aggression.”

House Administration

On Wednesday, May 24, the Subcommittee on Elections will hold a hearing titled, “American Confidence in Elections: Ensuring Every Eligible American has the Opportunity to Vote – and for their Vote to Count According to Law.”

House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence

On Thursday, May 25, the Subcommittee on Defense Intelligence and Overhead Architecture will hold a closed hearing on Foreign Materiel Acquisition / Exploitation.

Judiciary

On Tuesday, May 23, the Subcommittee on Immigration Integrity, Security, and Enforcement will hold a hearing called "The Biden Border Crisis: Part III."

Natural Resources

On Tuesday, May 23, the Committee on Natural Resources, Subcommittee on Water, Wildlife and Fisheries will hold an oversight budget hearing titled “Examining the President’s FY 2024 Budget Proposal for the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, and the Power Marketing Administrations."

On Tuesday, May 23, the Subcommittee on Federal Lands will hold a legislative hearing on the following bills:
