The Leader’s Floor Lookout: Week of January 15, 2024
Washington,
January 14, 2024
Here’s what to watch for on the House Floor this week:
Supporting Women and Families that Choose Life Last fall, Biden’s Department of Health and Human Services proposed a rule to restrict Temporary Assistance for Needy Family (TANF) funds for pregnancy centers that provide support to mothers and families that choose life, clearly violating the 1996 law creating TANF that prohibits Administrations from regulating its funds. These pregnancy centers provide services to protect the lives of both the mother and the child – something that Democrats have made clear is not their priority – such as treatments, education on parenting and prenatal care, ultrasounds, transportation and housing referrals, and resources like diapers, and served over 2 million women and families in 2019 alone. Once again, the Far Left is putting their radical agenda above the needs of pregnant women and growing families by trying to steer money away from these centers and towards facilities that provide abortions. Let’s be clear: Restricting funding to pregnancy centers whose purpose is to serve and assist pregnant women is targeted, political, and solely harms the women by taking away crucial resources. H.R. 6918, the Supporting Pregnant and Parenting Women and Families Act, introduced by Rep. Michelle Fischbach, prevents the Secretary of Health and Human Services from restricting funding for pregnancy centers that serve new mothers and families that choose life. House Republicans are standing up for mothers, babies, families, and life and will always fight to make sure they are supported and empowered. Protecting the Rights of Pregnant Students Unfortunately, many college students who become pregnant feel forced to choose between their child and their academic future, instead of feeling empowered to choose life and education. On college campuses, pregnant students face pressure to get an abortion, or else suffer in class, experience judgment from professors and students, or lose out on opportunities. Almost 30 percent of women getting abortions are around college age, between 20 and 24. However, under Title IX, pregnant students cannot be discriminated against or lose scholarships, housing, or other opportunities due to their pregnancy. It is vital that we ensure pregnant students are aware of their rights and resources available to them while balancing school, pregnancy, their health, and their growing family. This week, House Republicans are bringing legislation that does just that. This is common sense: Student mothers choosing life should have every opportunity to know and exercise their rights while pursuing higher education, and they deserve our support and help to succeed on campus. Rep. Ashley Hinson’s legislation, H.R. 6914, the Pregnant Students’ Rights Act, requires universities and higher education institutions to communicate and distribute information informing pregnant students of their rights, accommodations, and resources available to them. House Republicans are here to support pregnant students while they are studying for their futures and make sure higher education institutions are fulfilling their role in educating and bolstering students who choose life. Holding Hunter Biden Accountable for Violating Congressional Subpoenas
On December 13, 2023, Hunter Biden failed to comply with deposition subpoenas from the Judiciary Committee and the Committee on Oversight and Accountability as part of House Republicans’ impeachment inquiry and oversight investigations into President Biden. Hunter’s testimony is a crucial part of the investigation into President Biden’s involvement in shady family business dealings with foreign actors, the obstruction of the Hunter Biden criminal investigation, and the abuse of his office. Instead of following the law, Hunter Biden pulled a media stunt by hosting a press conference in front of the Capitol building and reading a short, prepared statement when he was supposed to be appearing in front of the committees. Last week, Hunter pulled yet another publicity stunt by crashing the Oversight and Accountability Committee’s hearing on holding him in contempt, before storming out mid-hearing. But now that the House is voting on two resolutions to hold Hunter Biden in contempt of Congress, his lawyers claim he will comply and sit for depositions – because he’s being held accountable. It’s not a shock that Hunter Biden thinks he can ignore the law or follow it when it pleases him because of his last name – his father and fellow Democrats have been making that clear for years. But House Republicans will not let him continue to disrespect the American people and play by a different set of rules. No one is above the law. H. Res. ___, introduced by Rep. James Comer, lays out how Hunter Biden failed to comply with a subpoena duly issued by the Committee on Oversight and Accountability and recommends the House of Representatives find him in Contempt of Congress. H. Res. ___, introduced by Rep. Jim Jordan, lays out how Hunter Biden failed to comply with a subpoena duly issued by the Committee on the Judiciary and recommends the House of Representatives find him in Contempt of Congress. The American people deserve the truth, as well as congressional representatives who uphold the rule of law for everyone, regardless of last name – House Republicans are delivering. ![]() ![]() Condemning Biden’s Open Border Policies and Safety Crisis
Under the Biden Administration, the crisis at our southern border has continued to grow worse and worse, consistently breaking their own records when it comes to failing to secure the border. Last December saw the most illegal immigrants processed by Border Patrol entering the U.S. in a month. Fiscal Year 2023 surpassed Fiscal Year 2022 as the worst year at the border with the most migrant encounters on record, 169 individuals on the terrorist watchlist apprehended attempting to illegally cross the border, and 27,023 pounds of fentanyl seized by the CPB. Since Biden took office, U.S. Customs and Border Patrol (CBP) have reported 6.2 million encounters at the southern border, in addition to 1.7 million known gotaways — and they aren’t just coming from Latin America: Migrants from over 230 countries were arrested in the past year. Despite the undeniable crises at the border hurting hardworking Americans and communities across the country, such as by forcing school children in New York to learn remotely while their schools are used to house illegal immigrants, Democrats refuse to reverse their failing policies and defend our nation’s borders. Rep. Nathaniel Moran’s legislation, H. Res. 957, condemns the Biden Administration’s open border policies, disregard of national security, and public safety crisis along our southern border, and urges President Biden to reverse course. House Republicans have been fighting to close Biden’s open border for three years, and we won’t stop until our borders are secure and our communities safe. |
