Committee Cliff Notes: Weekly Preview – Week of January 15, 2024

Here’s what to watch for from House Republican committees during the week:

Education and Workforce

On Thursday, January 18, the Subcommittee on Early Childhood, Elementary, and Secondary Education will hold a hearing called "Preparing Students for Success in the Skills-Based Economy."
 
Energy and Commerce

On Wednesday, January 17, the Subcommittee on Communications and Technology will hold a hearing called "Leveraging American Communications Leadership with Open Radio Access Networks."

On Wednesday, January 17, the Subcommittee on Oversight and Investigations will hold a hearing called "A Threat to Every Community: Assessing the Safety, Health, and Economic Consequences of President Biden's Border Policies."

On Thursday, January 18, the Subcommittee on Energy, Climate, and Grid Security will hold a hearing called "Fueling America’s Economy: Legislation to Improve Safety and Expand U.S. Pipeline Infrastructure."

On Thursday, January 18, the Subcommittee on Innovation, Data, and Commerce will hold a hearing called "NIL Playbook: Proposal to Protect Student Athletes' Dealmaking Rights."
 
Financial Services

On Wednesday, January 17, the Subcommittee on National Security, Illicit Finance, and International Financial Institutions will hold a hearing called "International Financing of Nuclear Energy."

On Thursday, January 18, the Subcommittee on Oversight and Investigations will hold a hearing called "Oversight of the SEC’s Proposed Climate Disclosure Rule: A Future of Legal Hurdles."
 
Foreign Affairs

On Wednesday, January 17, the Committee on Foreign Affairs will hold a full committee hearing called "Examining the Flow of U.S. Money into China’s Military Might."

On Wednesday, January 17, the Subcommittee on the Indo-Pacific will hold a hearing called "Protecting Emerging Technologies for Peace and Stability in the Indo-Pacific."

On Thursday, January 18, the Subcommittee on the Western Hemisphere will hold a hearing called "The Myth of the New Cuban Entrepreneurs: An Analysis of the Biden Administration’s Cuba Policy."

Homeland Security
 
On Wednesday, January 17, the Subcommittee on Counterterrorism, Law Enforcement, and Intelligence will hold a hearing entitled, “Safeguarding Dissident Voices: Addressing Transnational Repression Threats to Homeland Security.”

On Thursday, January 18, the Committee on Homeland Security will hold a full committee hearing entitled, “Voices for the Victims: The Heartbreaking Reality of the Mayorkas Border Crisis.”

Natural Resources

On Wednesday, January 17, the Committee on Natural Resources will hold a full committee markup on the following bills:
  • H.R. 1246, To authorize leases of up to 99 years for land held in trust for federally recognized Indian tribes (Hageman)
  • H.R. 2950, the Coastal Habitat Conservation Act of 2023 (Huffman)
  • H.R. 5482, the Energy Poverty Prevention and Accountability Act of 2023 (Hageman)

On Thursday, January 18, the Subcommittee on Indian and Insular Affairs will hold a legislative hearing on the following bills:
  • H.R. 6062, To restore the ability of the people of American Samoa to approve amendments to the territorial constitution based on majority rule in a democratic act of self-determination, as authorized pursuant to an Act of Congress delegating administration of Federal territorial law in the territory to the President, and to the Secretary of the Interior under Executive Order 10264, dated June 29, 1951, under which the Constitution of American Samoa was approved and may be amended without requirement for further congressional action, subject to the authority of Congress under the Territorial Clause in article IV, section 3, clause 2 of the United States Constitution (Radewagen)

On Wednesday, January 17, the Committee on Oversight and Accountability will hold a full committee hearing called "The Biden Administration’s Regulatory and Policymaking Efforts to Undermine U.S. Immigration Law."

On Wednesday, January 17, the Subcommittee on Cybersecurity, Information Technology, and Government Innovation will hold a hearing called "Toward an AI-Ready Workforce."

On Thursday, January 18, the Subcommittee on Economic Growth, Energy Policy, and Regulatory Affairs will hold a hearing called "The Next Generation: Empowering American Nuclear Energy."

Small Business

On Wednesday, January 17, the Subcommittee on Innovation, Entrepreneurship, and Workforce Development will hold a hearing called "Pathways to Success: Supporting Entrepreneurs and Employees with Disabilities.”

On Thursday, January 18, the Committee on Small Business will hold a full committee hearing called "Unleashing Main Street's Potential: Examining Avenues to Capital Access.”

Transportation and Infrastructure

On Wednesday, January 17, the Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure will hold a full committee hearing called "The State of Transportation."

On Thursday, January 18, the Subcommittee on Railroads, Pipelines, and Hazardous Materials will hold a hearing called “Oversight and Examination of Railroad Grade Crossing Elimination and Safety.”

Veterans Affairs

On Wednesday, January 17, the Subcommittee on Oversight and Investigations will hold an oversight hearing titled “VA Revolving Funds: Are Veterans Being Shortchanged?” 

Ways and Means

On Wednesday, January 17, the Subcommittee on Work & Welfare will hold a hearing called “Pathways to Independence: Supporting Youth Aging Out of Foster Care.”
