The Republican Recap: Week of January 15, 2024

Here’s a recap of what Republicans achieved on the House Floor this week:

Supporting Women and Families that Choose Life ✅

Last fall, Biden’s Department of Health and Human Services proposed a rule to restrict Temporary Assistance for Needy Family (TANF) funds for pregnancy centers that provide support to mothers and families that choose life, clearly violating the 1996 law creating TANF that prohibits Administrations from regulating its funds.

These pregnancy centers provide services to protect the lives of both the mother and the child – something that Democrats have made clear is not their priority – such as treatments, education on parenting and prenatal care, ultrasounds, transportation and housing referrals, and resources like diapers, and served over 2 million women and families in 2019 alone.

Let’s be clear: Restricting funding to pregnancy centers whose purpose is to serve and assist pregnant women is targeted, political, and solely harms the women by taking away crucial resources.

H.R. 6918, the Supporting Pregnant and Parenting Women and Families Act, introduced by Rep. Michelle Fischbach, prevents the Secretary of Health and Human Services from restricting funding for pregnancy centers that serve new mothers and families that choose life.

“Pregnancy centers support expectant mothers and their unborn children, offering a wide range of support. Unfortunately, this Administration is trying to push its anti-woman, anti-abortion agenda, this time taking aim at these vital centers,” said Rep. Michelle Fischbach. “In a new proposed rule, the Department of Health and Human Services is singling out pregnancy centers trying to block important TANF funding from these resources and instead direct it towards facilities that provide abortions. I introduced the Supporting Pregnant and Parenting Women and Families Act to ensure pregnancy centers cannot be excluded or restricted from receiving TANF funding. Conservatives are here for unborn babies and their mothers, and we want to ensure those moms are supported throughout their pregnancy and empowered to raise their families.”

What Members Said:

“Pregnancy centers do so much to invest in our community. They're often the first step for a mother who is dealing with an unplanned pregnancy and will help her assess her options, provide health care services, and support her after her child is born. For those who choose life, pregnancy centers are a lifeline. The bottom line is this: Expectant mothers who qualify and need this hand up under TANF deserve any and all options and resources available to them, including the option to choose life,” said Rep. Nick Langworthy.

Rep. Debbie Lesko pointed to how H.R. 6918 protects pregnancy resource centers that provide vital healthcare and counseling to new families.

Protecting the Rights of Pregnant Students ✅

Unfortunately, many college students who become pregnant feel forced to choose between their child and their academic future, instead of feeling empowered to choose life and education.

On college campuses, pregnant students face pressure to get an abortion, or else suffer in class, experience judgment from professors and students, or lose out on opportunities. Almost 30 percent of women getting abortions are around college age, between 20 and 24. However, under Title IX, pregnant students cannot be discriminated against or lose scholarships, housing, or other opportunities due to their pregnancy.

It is vital that we ensure pregnant students are aware of their rights and resources available to them while balancing school, pregnancy, their health, and their growing family. Student mothers choosing life should have every opportunity to know and exercise their rights, and they deserve our support and help to succeed on campus.

Rep. Ashley Hinson’s legislation, H.R. 6914, the Pregnant Students’ Rights Act, requires universities and higher education institutions to communicate and distribute information informing pregnant students of their rights, accommodations, and resources available to them.

“Pregnant women on college campuses should never be pressured into having an abortion, they should be surrounded with support and empowered to continue their education and their pregnancy. Women who choose to complete their studies while pregnant should be an inspiration to us all, and I find it sad that Democrats are so dug in on the pro-abortion agenda that they would oppose providing pregnant women on college campuses with resources and information about available protections under Title IX. This life-affirming legislation will help save moms and babies and is a vital step toward creating a culture of life in this country,” said Rep. Ashley Hinson.

What Members Said:

“Pursuing knowledge and having children – these are two virtues that carry immense social value and should be celebrated. I say should because as is more often the case, modern society holds them in conflict with one another. Pregnant students should not be faced with the dilemma that their academic and future success must be sacrificed to an unplanned pregnancy,” said Rep. Virginia Foxx.

Rep. Julia Letlow emphasized how H.R. 6914 will provide women with information that will protect both themselves and their children while they pursue an education.

Condemning Biden’s Open Border Policies and Safety Crisis ✅

Under the Biden Administration, the crisis at our southern border has only gotten worse. Last December saw the most illegal immigrants processed by Border Patrol entering the U.S. in a month. Fiscal Year 2023 surpassed Fiscal Year 2022 as the worst year at the border with the most migrant encounters on record, 169 individuals on the terrorist watchlist apprehended attempting to illegally cross the border, and 27,023 pounds of fentanyl seized by the CPB.

Since Biden took office, U.S. Customs and Border Patrol (CBP) have reported 6.2 million encounters at the southern border, in addition to 1.7 million known gotaways — and they aren’t just coming from Latin America: Migrants from over 230 countries were arrested in the past year.

Despite the undeniable crises at the border hurting hardworking Americans and communities across the country, such as by forcing school children in New York to learn remotely while their schools are used to house illegal immigrants, Democrats refuse to reverse their failing policies and defend our nation’s borders.

Rep. Nathaniel Moran’s legislation, H. Res. 957, condemns the Biden Administration’s open border policies, disregard of national security, and public safety crisis along our southern border, and urges President Biden to reverse course.

“President Biden’s open-borders policies have caused a national public safety crisis, undermined the rule of law, and brought into question the very sovereignty of the United States. We need a strong and vibrant immigration system. We also need a system that preserves our sovereignty, provides an orderly process for those coming legally, holds trespassers accountable, upholds the rule of law, protects our citizens from the dangers accompanying open borders, and is tailored to the needs of our growing workforce. It all starts with securing our border,” said Rep. Nathaniel Moran

What Members Said:

“I wonder how many of my liberal friends across the aisle have actually even been to the border. Let us be clear: This is a crisis of Biden's making. He has not been to the border, nor has Vice President Harris been to the border. They've been to a parking lot in El Paso, Texas, and that's as good as they could do. So over three years now, Biden has ignored calls from the American people to secure our border and protect American lives," said Rep. Roger Williams. "It's time President Biden his administration are held accountable for the lack of action at our southern border."

Rep. Mario Diaz-Balart highlighted how H.Res. 957 condemns the Biden Administration's negligence in securing our border.
