Committee Cliff Notes: Weekly Preview – Week of May 13, 2024

Here’s what to watch for from House Republican committees during the week:

Appropriations

On Wednesday, May 15, the Subcommittee on Financial Services and General Government will hold a budget hearing called "Fiscal Year 2025 Request for the Federal Trade Commission."

On Thursday, May 16, the Subcommittee on Financial Services and General Government will hold a budget hearing called "Fiscal Year 2025 Request for the Federal Communications Commission."

Education and the Workforce

On Wednesday, May 15, the Committee on Education and the Workforce will hold a full committee hearing called "Examining the Policies and Priorities of the Department of Health and Human Services." 
 
Energy and Commerce

On Wednesday, May 15, the Subcommittee on Environment, Manufacturing, and Critical Materials will hold a hearing called "The Fiscal Year 2025 Environmental Protection Agency Budget."

On Wednesday, May 15, the Subcommittee on Communications and Technology will hold a hearing called "The Fiscal Year 2025 National Telecommunications and Information Administration Budget."
 
Financial Services

On Wednesday, May 15, the Financial Services Committee will hold a full committee hearing called "Oversight of Prudential Regulators."
 
Foreign Affairs

On Wednesday, May 15, the Subcommittee on Africa will hold a hearing called "Examining the Fiscal Year 2025 State and Foreign Operations Budget Request for Africa."

On Thursday, May 16, the Foreign Affairs Committee will hold a full committee markup on the following legislation:
  • H.R. 8315, To amend the Export Control Reform Act of 2018 to prevent foreign adversaries from exploiting United States artificial intelligence and other enabling technologies, and for other purposes (McCaul)

Homeland Security
 
On Wednesday, May 15, the Committee on Homeland Security will hold a full committee hearing entitled, “Standing Strong on the Thin Blue Line: How Congress Can Support State and Local Law Enforcement.”

On Thursday, May 16, the Subcommittee on Emergency Management and Technology and the Subcommittee on Counterterrorism, Law Enforcement, and Intelligence will hold a joint hearing entitled, “Unmanned Aerial Systems and Emergency Response: The Impact of Drones and Other Emerging Technology on U.S. Law Enforcement.”

On Thursday, May 16, the Subcommittee on Oversight, Investigations, and Accountability will hold a hearing entitled, “Security Risk: The Unprecedented Surge in Chinese Illegal Immigration.”

House Administration

On Thursday, May 16, the Committee on House Administration will hold a full committee hearing entitled “American Confidence in Elections: Preventing Noncitizen Voting and Other Foreign Interference.” 

Judiciary

On Wednesday, May 15, the Select Subcommittee on the Weaponization of the Federal Government will hold a hearing entitled, "Hearing on the Weaponization of the Federal Government."

On Wednesday, May 15, the Subcommittee on the Constitution and Limited Government will hold a hearing called "Antisemitism on College Campuses."

Natural Resources

On Monday, May 13, the Subcommittee on Federal Lands will hold an oversight field hearing in Hayward, Wisconsin, titled “Improving Access and Opportunities for Hunting, Fishing, and Outdoor Recreation on America’s Federal Lands.”

On Wednesday, May 15, the Subcommittee on Federal Lands will hold an oversight hearing titled “Examining the President’s FY 2025 Budget Request for the Bureau of Land Management and National Park Service.”

On Thursday, May 16, the Committee on Natural Resources will hold a full committee oversight hearing titled "Examining the Council on Environmental Quality Fiscal Year 2025 Budget Request and Related Policy Matters."

On Thursday, May 16, the Subcommittee on Water, Wildlife and Fisheries will hold an oversight budget hearing titled “Examining the President’s FY 2025 Budget Proposal for the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, and the Power Marketing Administrations.”

Oversight and Accountability

On Wednesday, May 15, the Subcommittee on Cybersecurity, Information Technology, and Government Innovation will hold a hearing called "Red Alert: Countering the Cyberthreat from China."

On Thursday, May 16, the Subcommittee on National Security, the Border, and Foreign Affairs will hold a hearing called "Intruder Alert: Assessing the CCP’s Ongoing Infiltration of U.S. Military Installations."

On Thursday, May 16, the Select Subcommittee on the Coronavirus Pandemic will hold a hearing called "Overseeing the Overseers: A Hearing with NIH Deputy Director Lawrence Tabak."

On Tuesday, May 14, the Committee on Rules will meet on the following measures:

On Thursday, May 16, the Select Committee on the Chinese Communist Party will hold a hearing called "The CCP’s Role in the Fentanyl Crisis."

Small Business

On Wednesday, May 15, the Committee on Small Business will hold a full committee hearing called "Under the Microscope: Reviewing Key SBA Programs with Associate Administrator Frost."

Transportation and Infrastructure

On Wednesday, May 15, the Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure will hold a full committee hearing called "Reviewing and Examining the Francis Scott Key Bridge Federal Response."

Veterans Affairs

On Monday, May 13, the Health Subcommittee will hold a field hearing titled “Iowa: A Leader in Veteran Healthcare Innovation.”

On Tuesday, May 14, the Subcommittee on Technology Modernization will hold an oversight hearing titled “U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs Office of Information and Technology Budget Request for Fiscal Year 2025.” 

On Thursday, May 16, the Subcommittee on Oversight and Investigations will hold an oversight hearing titled “Ensuring VA’s Security: How Can Congress Best Support VA’s Law Enforcement?”
