Scalise: Republicans Are Fighting Against Voter Fraud

Today, House Republican Whip Steve Scalise (R-La.) joined ABC News’ GMA3: What You Need To Know to discuss President Biden and Senate Democrats’ efforts to abolish the filibuster and pass their radical so-called voting rights legislation that would allow the federal government to take over state and local elections and open the door to massive voter fraud. Whip Scalise called out President Biden for his inaccurate claims about voting rights and pointed out that anyone who is legally eligible to vote in the United States is able to vote. In addition, Whip Scalise called on Democrats to abandon their political theatrics and start working on reversing their numerous self-made crises that are hurting American families, workers, and small businesses.

Highlights from the interview:On President Biden’s error-laden speeches about voting rights:"If you look at the bill, first of all, President Biden has said many inaccurate things about this bill. [The] Washington Post has given him 'Four Pinocchios' multiple times for his speeches about it. [Republicans are] fighting for the right, for every person who's legally able to vote, to be able to vote once. And when you look at this bill, one of the things they do is they get rid of picture ID. They ban states – most states, by the way, require picture ID to vote. They ban that. Today, you can't even get into a restaurant in D.C. without a picture ID and a vaccination card. Yet they want to ban it for voting. They also put billions of taxpayer dollars into campaign accounts of elected officials and candidates for Congress. [Senate Majority Leader] Chuck Schumer – under this bill – will get $44 million of taxpayer money in his campaign account. You don't hear him bragging about that, by the way, when they talk about this bill. Those are the kind of things they do."They also make it harder for states to clean up their [voter] rolls and remove dead people from the rolls. Every year, as we know, people die, people move from place to place, and yet they make it very hard to clean up those rolls. So, fighting for the integrity of the vote, making sure that everybody who is legally eligible to vote can cast one vote. That is what we, as Republicans, are fighting for. That's not what this bill does. They know that. It's why it's not popular. It's why it's not going to pass." On the many options people have for when they cast their vote: "Look, we've had no problems with people voting who want to vote. That's why early voting has become more popular. It's widespread. Obviously, each state handles it differently, but the ability for people to vote on Election Day, there are a lot of people that still would rather vote on Election Day, but if they can't get out on Election Day, there are many different ways for people to vote early. And so, you're seeing states expand the ability for early voting. It's always been something that's I think, grown in popularity. So look, we had record turnout in 2020. So people that want to vote have had the ability to vote. Where we should be focusing on is those people that still don't vote, who are legally eligible to vote. And for various reasons, they choose not to vote. We ought to be trying to get them involved in the political process too."On Democrats' promoting voter fraud:"Same-day voter registration is a recipe for voter fraud. And if you look at some of the states where they do it, I mean, think of the idea where in this bill, again, they ban picture ID, and then if they mandate same-day voter registration, somebody could show up at every precinct in a state claiming to be, you pick a name, Mickey Mouse. And if they show up, and they say that – first of all, the state would be banned by law from asking for a picture ID and they'd have to give them a ballot. I don't think that's something that's going to encourage the integrity of the vote. It's ripe for voter fraud." On President Biden and Congressional Democrats politicizing voting rights:"Well, again, if we ignore the problems that people have expressed [about the last election], I mean, people saw that it took days age to get results in some states that they didn't follow the laws on their books. That's what got people very angry about the process. That's where we should be trying to clean that up. Fix it so that it doesn't happen again. And again, I've seen this in other states, [in] our state, we cleaned up our system. Our election commissioner went to jail for voter fraud. The last Democrat that had my seat in Congress went to jail for voter fraud. And so we, once we clean it up, you saw increased trust in the process."So every state is having this discussion, that's where the conversation should be. Georgia fixed their problems. Texas has fixed theirs. Other states should be focused on the problems they've got. Again, President Biden has a problem with the state of Delaware, which is more restrictive than Georgia. He should be trying to fix Delaware's law. I haven't heard him try to do that. Frankly, he hasn't tried to fix a lot of the problems in this country, like inflation, like high gas prices. So, this President should be focused on the problems that are hurting families right now, instead of going around and telling things that are not true about laws like Georgia's."
