The Republican Recap: Week of July 8, 2024
Washington,
July 11, 2024
Here’s a recap of what Republicans achieved on the House Floor this week:
Defending the Integrity of American Elections from Noncitizen Voting ✅ Currently, federal law states that it is illegal for foreign nationals or noncitizens to vote in U.S. federal elections or donate with regards to federal, state, or local elections in order to protect the integrity of our elections. However, as we’ve seen in states like Texas and Pennsylvania, noncitizens continue to unlawfully register to vote, diluting the votes of American citizens and potentially allowing foreign interference in our elections. With the over 7.2 million illegal immigrants that have come across our southern border thanks to President Biden’s open border policies, including more than 350 people on the terrorist watchlist, it is vital we shore up our election security and ensure that only American citizens are voting in American elections. House Republicans passed legislation to require proof of citizenship when registering to vote, as well as allow states to remove noncitizens from voter rolls, to keep foreign interference out of our elections, maintain election integrity, and increase American citizens’ trust in our federal elections. The right to vote is a foundational principle of the United States of America, and it must be protected. Rep. Chip Roy’s legislation, H.R. 8281, the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility Act, amends the National Voter Registration Act of 1993, requiring individuals to provide proof of United States citizenship in order to register to vote in federal elections. “Radical progressive Democrats are engaged in a wholesale attack on citizenship and what it means to be an American. Through open borders, lawlessness, and attacks on this nation’s founding principles, the Left is ripping at the very fabric that holds this nation together. “We will only be able to keep this republic as a republic as long as our citizenship as Americans remains meaningful. That’s why I introduced the SAVE Act in the first place, and it's why the People’s House passed it today. “I am grateful for Speaker Johnson's leadership and my Republican colleagues' support for getting this across the finish line. Today's passage is just the beginning, however. We must push forward, pressure the Senate, and keep up the fight for what makes this country great and what it means to be an American citizen," said Rep. Chip Roy. What Members Said: “For years, Democrats have called Republicans conspiracy theorists for stating Democrats want illegal aliens to vote in our elections – yet President Biden and every single Democrat in Washington want this bill to fail. If Biden and the Democrats want to clear up this conspiracy theory, Mr. President, when this bill passes, make sure you sign it into law,” said Rep. Wesley Hunt. “The most racist thing I've ever heard is the insinuation by Democrats that black and brown Americans are too stupid to get an ID to vote just like everybody else. I call this the soft bigotry of low expectations. Figuring out how to vote in this country is a very low bar, and we can all figure it out regardless of your race, religion, color, or creed, and we should all want free and fair elections.”
Majority Leader Steve Scalise pointed out that after opening our southern border to more than 8 million illegal immigrants, Democrats aggressively oppose H.R. 8281 which ensures noncitizens aren't voting in our elections – making their motives clear.
Rep. Burgess Owens observed that 198 Democrats voted against making sure only Americans vote in American elections. Protecting Women and Girls from Biden’s Dangerous Title IX Overhaul ✅ In April of this year, President Biden’s Department of Education finalized a Title IX rule that threatens to destroy protections for women’s sports and put young women and girls at risk by allowing transgendered athletes on women’s teams and in their locker rooms and bathrooms. It’s a scientific fact: Men and women have biological differences that make competing on the same sports team unfair and potentially dangerous. Allowing biological men to compete in women’s sports not only takes opportunities away from hardworking female athletes, but also places them in a position where they could more easily be injured. By allowing biological men into women’s locker rooms and bathrooms, this rule takes away spaces from women and girls where they have a right to feel safe and puts them at risk. No woman or girl should have to share a bathroom with or change in front of a biological male. Educational institutions have a duty to protect the safety of the women and girls that attend them, and ensure those women have the same access to athletic and educational opportunities as men – this rule shirks those responsibilities for the sake of appealing to radical woke activists. H.J. Res. 165, introduced by Rep. Mary Miller, reverses the Biden Administration’s Title IX rule relating to Nondiscrimination on the Basis of Sex in Education Programs or Activities Receiving Federal Financial Assistance so schools and educational institutions can continue to uphold the safety and educational and athletic opportunities of women and girls. “Today is a great day for our daughters and granddaughters, who deserve protection from Joe Biden’s radical attempt to force men into their private spaces and athletics. Title IX guarantees equal opportunities for girls in education and sports, but Joe Biden is putting our girls at risk by erasing their Title IX protections and claiming biological men should have access to girls’ bathrooms and locker rooms. Parents are horrified that Joe Biden is ignoring parental rights and forcing his leftwing agenda into our local schools,” said Rep. Mary Miller. “I’m proud to have my bill, which blocks Joe Biden’s Title IX rewrite, pass the House, and I urge the Senate to vote on this legislation quickly to protect our daughters from Biden’s dangerous agenda.” What Members Said: “For more than 15 years, Title IX has ensured our daughters have access to quality education and athletic programs. But now, President Biden and his bureaucrats at the Department of Education are hell bent on erasing those vital protections for our girls. This rule to redefine sex discrimination on the basis of gender identity will force schools to provide biological men who claim to be women access to women's locker rooms,” said Rep. Lisa McClain.
Majority Leader Steve Scalise called attention to the fact that 205 House Democrats voted against keeping biological males out of women's sports and locker rooms and preventing schools from leaving parents out of discussions on their child's sexual orientation and gender identity.
Rep. Vern Buchanan emphasized that we have a moral obligation to protect young women in America from dangerous policies like Biden's Title IX rule. ![]() Protecting Consumer Choice from Biden’s War on Refrigerators and Dishwashers ✅ Under the Energy Policy and Conservation Act (EPCA), the Department of Energy (DOE) sets efficiency standards for 60 product categories – but these standards must be cost-effective, significantly save energy, and be technologically feasible. Unfortunately, President Biden’s DOE has consistently abused their authority to push a radical energy agenda on American families and consumers, attempting to implement conservation standards that don;t meet these qualifications. These overreaching rules would take away consumer choice and burden American families by raising costs and forcing Americans to use appliances that do not perform as well. Additionally, the Biden DOE’s proposed standards aim to shut down the use of natural gas and force electric appliances on the American people, regardless of cost, performance, or availability – putting their radical Green New Deal agenda before the needs of hardworking Americans. While the Biden Administration fights to unleash a stream of new burdensome regulations for a multitude of vital home appliances like dishwashers, washing machines, refrigerators, air conditioners, and dryers, House Republicans passed legislation to protect consumer choice and keep government agencies out of your home. Let’s be clear: President Biden and Washington bureaucrats' war on everyday household appliances only hurts American families and small businesses. H.R. 7637, the Refrigerator Freedom Act, introduced by Rep. Mariannette Miller-Meeks, prevents the Secretary of Energy and the DOE from implementing new or amended energy efficiency standards for refrigerators, refrigerator-freezers, and freezers that are not technologically feasible and economically justified. “The Department of Energy and the Environmental Protection Agency under the Biden-Harris Administration have done nothing but implement overreaching extreme regulations that only serve to limit consumer choice, increase energy prices, and control everything Americans are able to do on a day-to-day basis while not meaningfully reducing emissions,” said Rep. Mariannette Miller-Meeks. “I’m pleased that my bill passed the House, and I will continue to ensure American consumers have freedom to choose what type of appliances they want in their own home.” H.R. 7700, the Stop Unaffordable Dishwasher Standards Act, introduced by Rep. Nick Langworthy, prevents the Secretary of Energy and the DOE from implementing new or amended energy efficiency standards for dishwashers that are not technologically feasible and economically justified. “When Congress enacted the Energy Policy and Conservation Act in 1975, the intent was to encourage energy efficiency in a manner that is both practical and cost-effective,” said Rep. Nick Langworthy. “However, unelected bureaucrats in the Biden Administration have twisted this law to serve a radical environmental agenda, imposing draconian standards that burden hardworking families. I’m proud that a bipartisan group of my colleagues in the House joined me in passing the SUDS Act to push back against these unreasonable and out-of-touch regulations.” What Members Said: “Under the guise of energy efficiency, this administration is issuing new standards that will significantly drive up costs, reduce reliability, and jeopardize the availability of numerous home appliances. House Republicans will continue to lead on legislative solutions that protect American families from out-of-touch, top down rules. The American people want choice,” said Rep. Rick Allen. “President Biden's war on American energy is crushing families' budgets nationwide, which is why I'm proud to support the SUDS Act as well as legislation being debated later today that will protect affordability, quality and choice for residential dishwashers, refrigerators, and freezers.” Rep. Daniel Webster highlighted that H.R. 7700 and H.R. 7367 protect Americans' right to choose which appliances to purchase based on what best suits their needs. Rep. Debbie Lesko celebrated that House Republicans continue to fight for American families against the Biden Administration's radical overregulation on home appliances.
