House Republican Whip Steve Scalise (R-La.) joined Republican Leadership and co-chairs of the Pro-Life Caucus on the House Floor last night to lead a series of unanimous consent requests to force House Democrats to vote on H.R. 18, legislation that will ensure that no federal funds pay for abortion. In his latest budget proposal, President Biden removed Hyde protections that would enable taxpayer funding support for abortions. Whip Scalise called on Democrats to keep the Hyde Amendment, which has stood for nearly 45 years and saved millions of unborn babies.

  Whip Scalise:   “Madam Speaker, I ask unanimous consent that the committees on Energy and Commerce, Ways and Means, and Judiciary be discharged from further consideration of H.R 18, the No Taxpayer Funding for Abortion Act to codify Hyde Amendment language and I ask for its immediate consideration in the House.”   Speaker Pro Tempore, Congresswoman Deborah Ross:   “Under the guidelines consistently issued by successive speakers as recorded in Section 956 of the House Rules and Manual, the Chair is constrained not to entertain the request unless it has been cleared by the bipartisan floor and committee leaderships.   Whip Scalise Efforts to Protect the Right to Life:

• This year, alongside his Republican colleagues in the House of Representatives, Whip Scalise reintroduced the Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act. This life-saving legislation secures medical protections for babies that survive an attempted abortion.
• Whip Scalise, Representative Ann Wagner (R-Mo.), and Representative Kat Cammack (R-Fla.) filed the discharge petition for the Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act. Speaker Pelosi directed House Democrats to block this commonsense legislation from coming to the floor for a vote.
• Last year, Whip Steve Scalise, Senator John Kennedy (R-La.), Senator Marsha Blackburn (R-Tenn.) and Representative Mike Johnson (R-La.) led 207 Members of Congress in filing an amicus brief to stand up for Louisiana’s pro-life law before the U.S. Supreme Court that would require all abortion providers to have admitting privileges at local hospitals when emergencies arise. This brief had more Republican signers than any other pro-life amicus brief.
• Whip Scalise is the first Republican Whip to formally whip votes in favor of a pro-life bill, the Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act. This bill would make it a crime to perform an abortion if the unborn baby is in the fifth month of pregnancy or more.
