Democrats Mount Assault on the Right to Life

TOPLINE: As the Biden Administration lurches further and further to the left, House Republicans will continue to stand against the Democrats' attack on innocent life. Democrats are wrong to try to end long-standing protections against abortion. The American people deserve to know where lawmakers stand on protecting the sanctity of human life.
Biden Avoids Defending the Unborn   Americans are eager for answers on the specifics of where the Biden Administration stands on important issues relating to protecting innocent life. But, outrageously, White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki will not say if President Biden believes a 15-week-old unborn baby is a human being.     It appears that Psaki is taking a page out of Speaker Pelosi’s playbook.     When asked by CNSNews.com’s Julia Johnson if an unborn baby at 15 weeks is a human being, Speaker Pelosi refused to answer the question and responded that she is a big supporter of Roe v. Wade and supported a woman’s right to have an abortion.     After the Supreme Court granted a review of a Mississippi law that limits abortions after 15 weeks, the Susan B. Anthony List published a poll that found:
  • 53 percent of likely voters are more likely to vote for a Republican who supports a 15-week limit on abortion versus just 28 percent of voters who would prefer a Democrat who supports unlimited abortion up until the moment of birth. Independent voters break strongly to the Republican side by a 54 percent to 18 percent margin.
  • 55 percent of likely voters say they are more likely to support a 15-week limit on abortion when they learn that an unborn child has the capacity to feel pain.

Democrats Target the Hyde Amendment, Want to Use Taxpayer Money to Fund Abortions   The Hyde Amendment once signified a common sense, bipartisan understanding of abortion. Lawmakers were able to see past their differences to acknowledge the gross danger posed by allocating taxpayer funding to abortion efforts.   After nearly 45 years of the bipartisan agreement on the Hyde Amendment, Democrats' appropriation bills this year would eliminate Hyde protections and all other abortion funding restrictions.   When asked about the Democrat efforts to terminate the Hyde Amendment, Whip Scalise responded:   "We’re going to fight with everything we have to preserve Hyde protections. This has been a bipartisan agreement going back to the 1970s when Henry Hyde first put limitations on taxpayer money being used to fund abortion into appropriations bills and then it started with one bill, and the next year he brought it to a few more and ultimately, it became part of any spending bill that you would have a protection that taxpayer funds wouldn’t be used to fund abortion. And you’re seeing President Biden trying to chip that away. They did it in the last non-COVID bill. The spending bill that spent over a trillion dollars did not have Hyde protections. But, we’re going to fight to ensure that any spending bill that moves through Congress continues to maintain the bipartisan, respected Hyde protections, and this will be a big fight."   In his latest budget proposal, President Biden removed Hyde protections that would enable taxpayer funding support for abortions. President Biden has flip-flopped on his stance on abortion over his 48 years in public service. As a Senator, he was a strong supporter of the Hyde Amendment and protected those who are pro-life from paying for abortions.     As the leader of the free world, President Biden is caving to the socialist and detrimental policies of the far-left. He has chosen to save face with progressives instead of saving the lives of unborn children.     To highlight the terrific work of the Hyde Amendment, which has stood for nearly 45 years and saved millions of babies, House Republicans are leading a series of unanimous consent requests where members will have the opportunity to force votes on keeping Hyde protections.   Last night, Republican Leadership and co-chairs of the Pro-Life Caucus sought to pass H.R. 18, legislation that will ensure that no federal funds pay for abortion.

Republicans aren’t alone in wanting to defend the Hyde Amendment. Democrat Senator Joe Manchin of West Virginia has made it clear that the Hyde Amendment is here to stay. “I’m going to support Hyde [Amendment] in every way possible," said Senator Manchin.     If President Biden cared about bipartisanship, then he would listen to the American people. Recent polling clearly shows that most Americans are against having taxpayer dollars allocated towards government-funded subsidies for abortion.     Biden’s goal isn’t to unify the country. It is to prop up radical socialist policies, which have proven catastrophic in other countries. Protecting the Hyde Amendment is essential to continuing the fight for life.
House Republicans Champion Human Life Through the Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act, Initiate Historic Discharge Petition   After Democrat-controlled states across the country initiated unthinkable attacks against human life through infanticide, Congress needed to take action. The Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act is needed to prohibit abortionists from murdering newborns after a failed abortion.   For a majority of Americans, infanticide has always been viewed as brutal murder. To the radical left, infanticide is considered to be an extension of “choice.” Let’s not forget when Democrat Virginia Governor Ralph Northam came to the shocking defense of born-alive abortions.     Polling data displays that a majority of Americans support medical care for babies that survive a failed abortion and oppose legislation that supports late-term abortions.     House Republican Whip Steve Scalise, Representative Ann Wagner, and Representative Kat Cammack have initiated a discharge petition to force a vote on the Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act on the House Floor. Not a single House Democrat signed on to the discharge petition. Speaker Pelosi, and her allies, have continuously stifled protections for the unborn, even going as far as to block this legislation more than 75 times.
BOTTOM LINE: While Speaker Pelosi blocks life-saving legislation and the Biden Administration neglects to take a stance on defining human life, House Republicans remain steadfast in their fight to protect the unborn.
