The Recovery Report

The Recovery Report is a weekly newsletter about America’s response to the coronavirus pandemic from Select Subcommittee on the Coronavirus Crisis (SSOCC) Republicans.  Coronavirus Facts of the Week: Operation Warp Speed, the Trump Administration's bold effort to develop. and deliver hundreds of millions of doses of a safe, effective vaccine for COVID-19 by January 2021, added another coronavirus vaccine candidate on Friday.
  • In the release announcing the addition, HHS Secretary Alex Azar said, “The portfolio of vaccines being assembled for Operation Warp Speed increases the odds that we will have at least one safe, effective vaccine as soon as the end of this year.”
  • Moncef Slaoui, a senior adviser in Operation Warp Speed, recently said he expects the United States to produce a vaccine that is up to 90% effective: "I think it will be a very effective vaccine. That's my prediction. My personal opinion based on my experience and the biology of this virus, I think this vaccine is going to be highly efficacious. I wouldn't be surprised if it's in the 90% [range]."
  • As part of Operation Warp Speed, the federal government has invested billions to accelerate vaccine research, with partnerships between the Department of Health and Human Services, the Department of Defense, and private pharmaceutical companies to ensure the United States is the first nation in the world to develop and deploy a coronavirus vaccine.
  • In response to these developments, it's no wonder China is trying to steal American vaccine data. The Communist Party of China has repeatedly lied to and misled the international community on the COVID-19 virus, and now seems intent on continuing their practice of intellectual property theft in the United States. The Select Subcommittee on the Coronavirus Crisis should hold a hearing to determine China's culpability for this pandemic immediately.
Coronavirus Quote of the Week: "I think it's important to realize that it's in the public health best interest of K-12 students to get back in face-to-face learning." — Robert Redfield, MD, Director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, during last week's Select Subcommittee on the Coronavirus Crisis hearing. Bogus Narrative of the Week: Democrats have continually pushed the false message that President Trump does not have a national plan to fight the coronavirus in the United States, going so far as to title a recent hearing, "The Urgent Need for a National Plan to Contain the Coronavirus." Why it's false: Democrats are fear-mongering for their own political benefit. The Trump Administration has released thousands of pages in guidance documents and issued hundreds of directives related to containing COVID-19, which originated in China before spreading to America. These directives have saved lives and President Trump's guidance to states is helping states manage their respective outbreaks as needed. Besides the creation and implementation of Operation Warp Speed, a historic effort to develop a coronavirus vaccine on an unprecedented schedule, one example of this plan in action has been the Trump Administration's push to safely reopen schools this coming fall, with the CDC and other organizations providing detailed guidance on how to implement a safe learning environment. Maryland Governor Larry Hogan just yesterday issued an emergency order confirming that schools should follow a flexible, science-based reopening process, specifically referencing CDC guidelines that encourage safe school reopenings this fall. This Week's SSOCC Highlights: Last week, the Select Subcommittee held a hearing with top Trump Administration officials, which Select Subcommittee Democrats deceptively titled, "The Urgent Need for a National Plan to Contain the Coronavirus." The Trump Administration witnesses, including Dr. Anthony Fauci, the Director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, Dr. Robert Redfield, the Director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and Admiral Brett Giroir, the Assistant Secretary for Health overseeing nationwide testing efforts, confirmed to the Select Subcommittee that President Trump has a comprehensive national plan to contain the coronavirus and that decisions made under that plan have already saved an untold number of American lives. Select Subcommittee Democrats, rather than focusing their efforts on protecting American lives and communities, pushed a false political agenda solely intended to harm President Trump. Watch Ranking Member Scalise's opening questioning of Dr. Fauci here, or click on the image below. Excerpted highlights: Whip Scalise: Were you involved in working with President Trump on deciding to ban flights from China? Dr. Fauci: Yes, sir. I was. Whip Scalise: Do you agree with that decision? Dr. Fauci: I do. Whip Scalise: Do you think that decision saved lives, Dr. Fauci? Dr. Fauci: Yes, I do. Whip Scalise: Do you agree with the decision when ultimately, we saw [COVID-19] spreading in Europe, and the President recommended that we extend [the travel ban] to Europe. Did you participate in that discussion? Dr. Fauci: I was actively involved in that discussion, sir. Whip Scalise: Do you agree with that decision? Dr. Fauci: Yes, I do. Whip Scalise: Do you think that decision saved lives? Dr. Fauci: Yes, I do. Whip Scalise: Eventually, then we saw the United Kingdom have an outbreak and there had to be a tough decision made. Did we extend that to the United Kingdom? Were you a part of that decision? Dr. Fauci: I was. Whip Scalise: And do you agree with that decision as well? Dr. Fauci: I do. Whip Scalise: Did that decision save lives? Dr. Fauci: Yes, it did. Whip Scalise: When you look at the ’15 Days to Slow the Spread.’ Initially it started at 15. Were you part of the decision to implement that decision? Dr. Fauci: I was very much involved in that. Whip Scalise: Did that decision save lives, Dr. Fauci? Dr. Fauci: I believe it did. Whip Scalise: Then when President Trump met with you and Dr. Birx to extend that another 30 days, do you agree with that decision President Trump made to extend that? Dr. Fauci: Yes, I was very much involved, and I agree with it. Whip Scalise: Did that decision save lives, Dr. Fauci? Dr. Fauci: I believe it did. Whip Scalise: So, I know we’ve heard a lot about disagreements. Clearly, there are many decisions made. In fact, there are many very internationally respected doctors that are involved in each of those decisions. Is that correct? Dr. Fauci: Yes. Whip Scalise: By and large, would you say that you and President Trump have been in agreement on most of those decisions? Dr. Fauci: We’re in agreement on virtually all of those. Watch Ranking Member Scalise question Dr. Redfield on reopening schools here, or click on the image below. Excerpted highlights: Whip Scalise: Do you think that schools should safely reopen this fall with in-person learning? Dr. Redfield: Yes, I think it's important to realize that it's in the public health best interest of K-12 students to get back in face-to-face learning. There's really very significant public health consequences of the school closure. Whip Scalise: For example, they lack the ability to detect child abuse that occurs and is detected often in schools. Do you know how much child abuse will not be detected if children aren't returning to school? Dr. Redfield: Clearly, we're seeing less reporting of it and again, I think it's a direct consequence of the school closures. 7.1 million kids get their mental health services at schools, they get nutritional support as we mentioned from schools. We're seeing an increase in drug use disorder as well as suicide in the adolescent individuals. So, I do think it's really important to realize it's not public health versus the economy about school opening, it's public health versus public health of the K-12 [students] to get these schools open. We’ve got to do it safely and we've got to be able to accommodate. As the House enters August recess, the Select Subcommittee isn't taking a break. The Select Subcommittee will hold a hearing this Thursday at 2 p.m. on “Challenges to Safely Reopening K-12 Schools.” Republicans on the Select Subcommittee have repeatedly emphasized that schools not only can reopen safely, but must reopen safely for the sake of public health. Republicans have also pointed out that states still have billions of dollars appropriated under the CARES Act which they can use to help safely reopen schools.
